Leader Advice

I looking for some advice on the type of leader to use for Salmon. I'll be using a 9 ft 8 wt
fly setup. I'll be using flies and some of the guys I'll be with use the plastic eggs so I'll be trying that also. I'm basically a newby so thanks for the help.

Grad a spools of pline floro or seaguar floro in 10,12,15lb test you get a few hundred yds for what you'd spend on a single 25-30meter spool.

I'll use a 20lb mono leader tied to a bull nose swivel.  Then I'll attach 3 feet of fluoro tippet in 15lb.  I fish a 10 foot rod so I keep the leader at 10 feet.

8 weight can get a little sketchy depending on the action. I have one 8 weight I do not feel that good about for salmon and another with a fatter action that I have caught many.  I will often use  a simple 20/15 leader and then 10lb tippet. If there is alot of brush I will just go 20 and the 15 tippet. I use  spools of seaguar floro for all this, sometimes I will just use some trilene xt, especially for the leader..

4' of 35 lb. fluoro nail knotted to the flyline,(I like the heavier butt for good turnover and putting on indicators)  3' of 20 lb. blood knotted to the leader butt then attached to a #12 back barrel swivel with a 15 lb. tag for shot attached to the eye closest to the fly. The tag will often have you just have the shot slide off the tag, rather than losing your whole rig. Also helps with twist, keeping your tippet stonger. Always tie the tippet in the same eye as the tag.  3' 10-15 fluoro tippet, depending on water flow and the flies and technique  I'm using. There's a pretty good difference in tippet materials vs. cheaper bulk spool. I'm more interested in legal fishing and catching the steel running with the salmon, so I don't mind the extra money  for better performance. I can write a page or 2 about abrasion resistance, diameter vs. strength, shock protection/elongation, tensionometer testing, rate of sink, visibility, leader turnover blah, blah, blah. I spend a bunch of money on  travel, food, etc..., I'm not about to cheap out on the main thing I'm there for.
I generally use Orvis Mirage in the fall, it being a little cheaper , but it does get brittle in the cold, so I switch to Airflow and Drennan when the water gets in the 40 range.

While its not your standard leader formula , when fishing for salmon I go along the same lines as Clint .
For me it's 5' leader of standard 20 lb berkley big game then 4' tippet of maxima chameleon in spools of 12-10 & yes 8 lb. Maxima seems to me stronger then test rated and is obviously larger in diameter then others.
I do not get to fancy on my leaders & tippets for salmon as you will tend to see they get chewed up and broken off often . I don't ( but its ok to ) use a swivel to attach leader to tippet. I just double surgeon knot them together . Using a swivel does allow you to keep your leader portion in tact longer but also means another component to fail .
As for any shot I may add , it will be right on the tippet very close to the fly .
Unlike a trout , salmon will either strike or it won't . It's not going to be picky and examine your offering such as a trout would so my thoughts are to keep things simple and strong .
Also as for your rods , in the many years fishing salmon I have used an 8 wt. . And yet to break a rod . Given that said , all 8 wt rods are not equal . My st croix rod is much stiffer then my 8 wt sage . I often felt the sage was going to blow up .It all depends on the action and model from manufactures . There have been times I sure wish I had a 9 wt but make due with what I have.

I'm sure many others will have different leader/ tippet formulas that work as well.
    Good luck .

Make sure you don't exceed the 4' tippet or distance to your weight, that's the legal maximum and I did actually have a warden check.

To clarify what fitchy said about tippet length, your weight can not be more then 4' from hook.
I build a tapered leader but that's me,you can do what others have said and it works.

Thanks for all your opinions a lot of great info to consider.
I'll probably just keep it simple like the 20 off the fly line
barrel swivel and something less to the hook. Sounds like you
all use flies, what would be a few good patterns to start with?
I'm very new to this just trying to cut down on my learning curve.
    Thanks

I would suggest putting 25 or 30# butt off of your fly line before the 20#.... I'm withfichy on that one for a few reasons

Glo bugs, estaz flies on #10 egg hook, various nympths, streamers, wooly buggers, and just about anything else. However many times color is the most important so have all types with pink, red, chatreuse, oregan cheese, black, brown, olive.and others.
By the way use floracarbon tippet in 8 -12#,it sinks and does make a difference with visibility. Also use just enough weight to tick the bottom while making a DRAG FREE drift

I also agree with Fichy on the butt, the heavier material gives you a lot better turnover especially with the heavier  (8 or 9) weigh flyline.  I have been using the tag for the shot for 30+ years, but I just don't trim the tag end of the tippet, and put the shot on there.  And I use perfection loops and loop them together a la Lefty Kreh.

Perfection loop. Use amnesia 30 lb butt then a 7' tapered ( bought ) leader, frog hair fluro tippet for steel trout .
Salmon , well I'm cheap and fugal , plus its a bear to see anymore . Many knots cause many problem for me and those fish cause many retires .
I'm not typically nymphing / bouncing salmon so I just forgo the tag/ swivel and direct weight to tippet up close .
Just my way to roll on those species

20LB leaders can be bought off the shelf and I've never had a problem with them....Get good swivels and then just experiment with the fluoro tippet.  Frankly 12 and 15lb should do it.   I sold my Sage One 8 weight as it broke twice on the SR...I am now a devout Loomis guy.  You can buy cheap swivels in Pulaski...I fish bullnose swivels that are a $1 a piece.  To each his own.

I've never had a Spro swivel fail. I doubt I go through 3 dollars worth in a season.

I tied some leaders last winter that I plan to try.  Going to give a tippet ring a try and see if it makes things quicker when I need to replace my tippet.  Its getting tough to tie those blood knots with my vision as poor as it is in my left eye. If the rings don't cut it I'll go with a double surgeon's knot.

In that regards, my reference was to my knot or tying them , not the swivel itself..
I use spro micro for steel to ice fishing and the size #4 welded ring B/B coastlocks on the lake... They aren't no cheapers..
