We could and hopefully will, Andy. Wayne and I fished on Clint's rock 5' from each other and did well last fall.  Wayne took the nymphing seam, I took a short swing in the tail. Both produced fish.

Hopefully I can free some time up this fall and winter to get some Time in when any of the gang are up... Man tail of the church hole... I miss its old form

Great job guys.  Congrats to Big Bear.  I can wait to give these flies a go and may get a chance to do so the weekend of the 19/20th.

Look forward to giving them all a try. Charlie once again thanks for putting this together. Glad we have a spot to share not only our experiences together but now our flies. Best of luck with them guys. I hope to sneak up next weekend myself we are in Syracuse for the world indoor lacrosse tournament and I don't think I can be that close without getting up there on a recon mission seeing I'll be there the 23rd through the 25.

HT, if you are serious about going blind, it might pay to have your sugar checked.  I got a bad report in January, went on a diet, had my eyes checked, and 9 months later I am 4 sizes smaller, but my eyes check out as good as they have since second grade when the glasses became a permanent fixture, and my ACI was in the "clear " range last check up.  I go back in about 3 weeks for the second round.  Type II is insidious and goes after the eyes, the feet, and other body parts in subtle ways, doing its damage before being discovered unless you are vigilant.   I could walk you around and tie your flies on for you, but I'm not sure I could tell you when the line moves fast enough for you to set the hook!

Re: Swap 2015/09/16 19:35:21 (permalink)
I need all the saving I can get at this point , lol
Good easy advice though.
So I looked through my boxes . I still have tons of salmon flies , mostly though , brightly colored comets and such geared toward the lower river.
I have a decent selection for mid- upper sections. I feel pretty confident everything will fish and excited to toss out abunch of swap flies . I will fish them hard !!
As for tying more , ah , maybe a 1/2 doz or so olive or brown buggers to supplement . If there is a hot bite on something you guys are using and not working for me then , heck yea I'm not to proud to ask for help .
Thanks guys :)
This swap worked well

I also heard that they will bite on black sponge is that true? But I was told when they do go after the black sponge it's usually with their back or tail sometimes with their fins.

They will hit the black sponge, but it has to be during the black sponge bloom. Only happens for two weeks in October.  You have to rip it through the water though, like a crank bait.  That's the reason so many are fouled.

Re: Swap 2015/09/17 07:56:51 (permalink)
Black sponge flies are the very effective imitations of a species peculiar to the Great Lake tribs, Blottus Nonintelligentsia. Like Clint informed us of, it is normally a sedentary blob-like organism living under discarded trash on the river bed, which during its peak mating season,  rapidly darts about the river trying to attach to anything it can. I'm kind of glad no one included a pattern in the swap, as they are so effective as to make them unsporting to use. I missed 2b's post, I assume he was bringing the fact we didn't have any in the swap to our attention. However,  the flies I offered up can be used as a substitute. Pretty effective when used in the proper, quick darting retrieve.

Black sponge with a drop or two of anise oil.  Works for bass, why not salmon?  LOL

I never thought of that, the ripping motion is just an effective method of scent dispersant.  Every quick  lift of the rod rings the dinner bell.  Spend enough time on the river and you finally learn the secrets of the pros.

Re: Swap 2015/09/18 07:31:26 (permalink)
I always thought it as interesting when the pros were surprised that the salmon had occasionally ingested some of their sponge, getting hooked in the corner of the mouth.  It seemed that more fish had collisions with the rapidly darting sponges.  Back in the day the dominant species was yellow orange, but over time genetics has apparently favored the black variety.

I will say that it need not be a complex tie to be effective.  One of the early falls when we were up for the kings, wooly worms were the hot ticket, with blue the big color.  It has been 25 or so, years that pattern should be coming back around one of these days.

Re: Swap 2015/09/18 17:30:34 (permalink)
We were hammering September Kings with them back then, but I've seen them used for chrome since then.  And the fly is just a bobtail woolly bugger, a little less action, but maybe more effective at hooking, although when a 12 to 24 lb fish takes a shot at a size 6 fly, what is an extra inch of wiggle?

I hooked a nice largemouth on Keith's helgramite last night. Jumped off, but it got its first sting in!  I jinxed it by telling Wayne to get the camera ready.

I texted my guide and things were slow today.  His fares went 1 for 5 and 1 waldo.  Water is too warm.  I honestly would rather take my chances now than deal with the combat style fishing that is to come.  I'm confident I'll find some fish to play with, I always do.

Ok now I'm getting anxious.. To try my hand with some flies for river action.. I didn't get a package today (my mail sucks) but I didn't catch a river salmon at all last year .. Oops, strike that .. Sorry 3 fan, you hooked me up with that hoe in November :)..
Anyway. Once I get done in the Magical Kingdom next week I will start to gather my river gear together.. Think I'm going to be pretty well set in the fly department.. with the new stuff coming and the masses of old new stock, I'm confident ..
Seen some pics of a few fish caught today, some hoes, kings and chrome.. Lets hope those chrome throw caution to the wind and smash my chitty leaders, lol  Don't worry, I will carry the proper gear for them too :)
Spro ball bearing swivels ROCK !! For the lake, they are $16.00 for 3  :(
Good luck to all that wet a line this weekend.. Only one for me will be a Jet Air-Line
Peace & Tuna

Anxious is good.   Jack needs a better net man than just me. Seeing your Grandson  laughing and having a blast  will be priceless, but just occasionally remember a big piece of chrome rocketing into the air......
