Ice on the Allegheny?

Anyone catch one of the weathermen commenting on the thickness of the ice on the Allegheny last week. He said the thickness of the ice in some places was 6 to 8 feet thick. He actually demonstrated against a block wall how much that was. I don't know much about that area but logic leads to believe he was misinformed. Feel free to correct me and aid in explaining how that could be.

    I heard some of that report. I figured there was some ice jam and it was piled up to 8 feet.  If the river had 8 feet of ice the lakes would probably be solid. Lol

    When I was growing up in Franklin, PA. as a kid, it was not uncommon for French Creek to flood from ice dams and huge chunks of ice could be seen laying on shore and at times on Otter Street.  Oil City PA. was another area that received it's share of flooding when Oil Creek would overflow her banks and carry huge chunks of ice onto shore, into buildings and, onto roads.

    A sheet of ice forms and flows down river until it collides with another piece of ice and either slides on top of or under. This continues on and on and the layer of ice grows. The ice dunes up at Erie grow they same way. Ice is continually pushed into the shore where it just keeps stacking up.
