.357 loads

Hello, My buddy just got a Henry lever action rifle in the .357 cal., Can anyone here recommend a hunting load that you have personally used?  thanks  sam

    Not out of a rifle, but I have taken several deer with. .357 revolver that was loaded with. 158 Hornady JHP ahead of 8 grains of Unique and a mag primer.

    DarDys, That wt. of powder surprises me because I was thinking more along the lines of stabilization of the bullet because of the problems that I had trying to get a load for a 30-30 with my contender. Thanks for the reply.  sam

    That was a 6" revolver load, Sam. And it was pretty hot. A normal load was 5 grains. The target load was a 148 wadcutter with only 3 grains.

    Not sure exactly what would work in a rifle with a longer barrel.

    Lyman book has load info specifically for .357 rifle.  Since long range is not what you'll be looking for, I'd go heavy with 158 or 170gr.  I've used both IMR 4227 and Alliant 2400 with a handgun.  I'd probably go with whatever powder you can find right now.  Handgun powder is not easy to come by if you're looking for something specific.  Anyway, as usual, start low and work your way up.
