type of rod

I know this is a personal choice thing,but I am looking for a new spinning rod for throwing plugs from shore for eyes & bass. Looking for suggestions as to length,action ,tip,lure & line weights. thanks  sam

    Currently I use 2 different ones, my "plugs" rod is a G-Loomis 783-2 (6'6") rated at med/heavy 8-12 fast action, my other is a fast action med/light 7' 6-10#.  I myself prefer the 7' because it's a lighter power rod and more sensitive.  If my loomis was med action fast I would probably use that alot more.  But, I would say try to find a 7' medium moderate or fast action with a weight of 3/16-5/8oz with a 6-12# range unless you're throwing superlines then i'd use 14-20lb...

    At the risk of being laughed completely off this site, I personally love to throw lightweight lures on 6# test with my  10' noodle rod. I can cast great length, fight sizeable fish and have a great fight doing it. However, expect some weird looks from other folks.

    olgerman, I am sure that you can cast a mile with that outfit,but what is your hook-up to landed ratio? I have a poor landed ratio because my Uglystick cast well,but with that soft tip I seem to not be able to set the hook well,esp. with poppers. I have a 7' Shakespear m/ with a med. action that doesn't cast as well,due to being too stiff of a tip. I won't use my 7' St. Croix because it is not rated for heavier lures & I am afraid that I would snap the rod while casting, although I have landed Carp in the 15# range with on 4# line.  sam

    I use a St. Croix Triumph as my go to rod.  7' 2 piece, medium action fast taper.  This is one of the best all around rods I have found.  It handles small to medium size plugs with no problems.  It has plenty of backbone for a good hookset and it has enough power to land just about anything you are likely to hook.  I've used it for pellet heads in the spring, throwing jerkbaits for smallmouths on Erie, and throwing plugs and jigs for walleyes in Quebec(and everything else in between).  When matched with the correct line(I throw 8# if the water is free of obstructions and 12# when I need it) it comes close to the magical and mystical "do-it-all" rod we know doesn't exist.  Best of all is you are getting a truly high quality rod at a reasonable price and you are supporting the hosts of this forum.  It's a win-win in my book.

    coldfront, I would think that a pro eye fisher would spend most of his time trolling or jigging & not need to cast as much as a shore fisherman would,that is why I was hoping that some of the guys that wade the lakes at night would reply.  sam

    Go into the fisheries store and pick up one of the Envy rods. SUPER light. They were all fast action and I think 6'6".

    Throwing from shore, I'd go longer.  Depends on the lure size, but I'd suggest something in the 7'6" range, either medium/moderate or med-hvy/moderate
