Its impossible to even try to understand what kind of "feelings" fish have because their sense of touch is largely based in changes in water temperature and pressure and hardly similar to our sense of touch and pain. Also iirc there is some pretty accepted phylogenic/cladistic research that shows the area in human/mammal/bird brains that detects pain hadnt developed fully in reptiles/amphibians and fish.

Point is they might feel some sort of pain, that we could never make a comparison to, so when you catch them, release or kill them quickly and just dont be a dick

some additional scientific research:

so you can be fined and/or go to jail for harassing a dog but not for harassing a fish (ie: catch and release)???

Seems like a lot of the behavior in that paper is specific to individual species and also inherent, not learned.

"it would be impossible for fish to survive as the cognitively and behaviourally complex animals they are without a capacity to feel pain" - thats debatable

Maybe its just me but that article came off as biased and disjointed, made a few good points though about the neocortex comparison that were interesting tho. Ill have to look into that.
