NEW BUOY
I cast quite a few votes for this buoy after the requests to do so were posted on these boards. I went to the site this morning, and am I the only one seeing the potential for complaints because all the data is in metric measurements? Wave heigth in meters, wind speed in meters per second, temp. in celcius, etc. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I think it would be nice to access this real time data and not have to rely on another app to convert, especially when I'm out on that lake and the weather is about to change. Any thoughts?

Yeah not real convenient for us lazy Americans that never went metric but I don't think it will take long to quickly convert these readings in our heads after some use. The buoy we're talking about for those not aware is at http://wqdatalive.com/public/55 Long overdue and sure to be a great asset to us boaters (smack dab in the middle of the Perch grounds) No mooning the webcam fellas

it may be that the system is still being set up and tested and the final settings haven't been put in place yet. disregard the location thing... I posted when Pie did and now see the link... thanks!

The two towers present the data in a non-metric format. With any luck the buoys will do the same, or list both metric and imperial units. I had the entire family voting everyday. Glad they decided to fund more than one project, the Loggerhead group came on strong in the end.

Pie, I'm not so sure about that. Good luck trying to remember how wind speeds in meters per second relates to wind speeds in miles per hour or how wave height in meters equates to feet, and not even going to deal with converting C temps to F. All they have to do on this site is use a / next to the metric numbers and throw in the "real" numbers. If they're no longer trying to convert students here from an early age, they're sure as hell not going to be converting anyone out on the lake. They wanted us to vote on this to get this buoy in Erie, the least they can do is make it as user friendly as possible. The vast majority of people accessing this data do not use the metric system. Come on Ms. Schnars, get on this.

I definitely see your point. Shouldn't be a big deal for them to show both. I for one though will be using it primarily for the webcam. What I can see right now will usually determine if I head out there or not. Once there, I use "Rainy Days" for radar and whatever else for wind predictions and can pretty easily determine when it's time to skedaddle.

Here's a quick guide.. Convert meters to feet= Meters x 3.28 Convert celsius to farenheit= (Celsius+32) x 1.8

WIND DIRECTION: 13 degrees. ??????????? yeah, I know what this means, but does the average person? my only point is that the average boater wants to look at the numbers and not have to do conversions in their heads or on their smart phones.

Wind in M/sec.? Just multiply it by 2.25. You'll be close enough. ex 5 m/sec.= 11 mph

If you are already out on the lake, why would you need this real time data to tell you what the lake is doing? I would be willing to bet that these buoy's are used worldwide, so they are probably manufactured to send the data in metric since that is what everyone except the U.S. uses. They probably just haven't had the time to write the code to do the conversions.....

Last video available is from May 7th; measurements still gibberish. Wasn't the grant we voted for intended for an educational effort?

LOCOJOE, I know. what's up with that video. Thought this was supposed to be real time. Loco's right, last video time stamped 7 may, 12:02. I've called the office of Ms. Schnars several times but the line is busy or I get voice mail.

Well, I guess the squeaky wheel does get the grease. I see the buoy's data is no longer in metric units but they seem to be having a problem with the camera. they fixed it once but it's down again for repair. wonder what the problem is here? must be somewhere in the updating of the video every 1/2 hour. hope this isn't going to be an ongoing problem. that real time view of the lake conditions is a huge plus for boaters.

This is hard to believe. At 1220 on 5-28 max wave height about 1.250 ft; significant wave height .75 ft. Winds 14-17mph from E. Lake from my window totally shrouded in fog.

locojoe, Those buoy's don't measure from the trough to the crest of the wave, I believe it is more the water line to the crest so you need to multiply by 1.9 to get the real height.

I seen Tom Atkins was using the Buoy data on WJET tv for his Lake Erie forecast. BH

Looked at the archived video from 5/19. Better not show that to my wife. She'd get seasick just watching that...

And what's the deal with the use of a decimal point in the Lat/Lon numbers? It's not a decimal-based system. An online converter yields 42° 11' 8"N 80° 8' 10"W from the given 42.185635 and -80.136513 .
