I catch loads sometimes. Sometimes 3doz in one trap. My problem is they're rarely the size I want. Trout or crappie fishing I get 7" monsters. Catfish or walleye fishing I get the stinking 2"ers. I have started setting 2 traps at 2 different spots. Seems to help. Traps are cheap.

A single maggot on a small size 12-14 hook with the barb smashed down and a tiny strike indicator, all the creek chubs you want.

Here's a gamefish for 'ya. Nice 22"r I caught in 2014. No smallmouth or walleye is going to mess with this thing! http://roughfish.com/site...lt/files/image_56.jpeg . Never saw a white sucker that big in my life and haven't since then, it was in a tiny, narrow, shallow pool in a local public place too! Can't believe the PFBC doesn't keep records for individual sucker species, if they did I'd probably hold it for that species now, and for a fat 15" creek chub I caught in November!

Nobody carries big baits because they don't sell for enough $$ to be worth getting/raising and then keeping alive.  Creek chubs are hardy little bastriches... some cold water and a bubbler and they'll outlive most aquarium fish.  But suckers are another story.  They really need current, and they need clean cold water plus a bunch of food.  I've caught some pigs in my nets over the years, and none of them did very well despite several attempts to keep them lively.

I'm a summer guy and you won't catch me near a stream until I can wade in with tennis shoes and shorts.  But my pappy always said suckers were a winter game.  I suspect there were much better numbers back in his day, what with all the BS dumped in our creeks.

Good luck out there.

Yes  ReddiBait in bridgewater beaver county sells  BIG bait   Suckers, Sunfish/Bluegills.  And Some other big bait Can't remeber what they were?   Also has some Big Frozen bait

I think you're allowed to use sunfish as bait as long as you catch them with hook and line. Not sure if you can sell them without an extra permit or two, though.

You can definitly use carp for bait. One of the best baits out there for musky if you can find them in the right size. Selling and transporting them is where things get illegal.

its is unlawful to ...
  • To use gamefish as bait except when taken by rod and reel or handline in conformance with seasons, sizes and creel limits or when purchased from an authorized bait dealer.

Wish I had a steady source to 10-12 inch carp...perfect musky candy and legal considering there is no size limit to carp. To be honest I dont think ive ever seen a carp that small before haha

Quick strikes are good but Dahlberg's Magic Hook, or no hook method do the least amount of damage to the ski and allow the bait to swim with less drag, and live longer.

Carp are illegal to use as bait in PA,

BAITFISH includes all forms of minnows; suckers, chubs, Fallfish, lampreys; Gizzard Shad; and all forms of darters, killifishes and stonecats (except those listed as threatened or endangered species). Legally taken gamefish may be used as bait. It is unlawful to use or possess goldfish, comets, koi and Common Carp as baitfish while fishing.

Chubs love those Gulp grubs, and they are not as perishable as live bait. One jar will keep my bait tank loaded all year.

lol edited my previous post since I was wrong, dont want anyone getting in trouble. The game commish has so many laws that are either vague or misleading. One page says its fine to use any game fish that are legally caught as bait...then on another it says the opposite. Thanks for clearing that up...still think its a ridiculous rule for something that is so abundant in or rivers and streams.

Anyone know any good snakehead spots? Hear they make awesome pike bait...

Snag, I believe that the rule was to try to stop the spread of Carp & gold fish etc. since they were invasive species & not considered gamefish. A lot of guys would just dump any leftover bait in the water they were fishing & prob. did spread them around.  sam

Carp were introduced to America's fresh waters back in 1831 by the U.S. Government as a "food fish".  Dang, did biologist exist then?

Actually, yes, they did. However, the European immigrants wanted Carp for food because the entire country was decimating the health and population of every native species we came across through logging, erosion, siltation, and water quality degradation. So, the government figured that the people needed something to eat. Carp actually taste pretty good if cooked correctly (as in not filleted, breaded, and pan fried) and were originally found on menus in upper class restaurants along the east coast (especially the New York City area), but once the 1% discovered that their delicious fish was being eaten by the "inferior" lower class, they moved on and found a fish that was more expensive and rare to eat.

The annual tonnage of common carp, produced in China alone exceeds the weight of all other fish, such as trout and salmon, produced by aquaculture worldwide. China is by far the largest commercial producer, accounting for about 70% of carp production.  Carp is eaten in many parts of the world both when caught from the wild and raised in Aquaculture.  In some parts of the world, Carp is a traditional Christmas Eve dinner and, can still be found on upper class menus in America.  Carp roe is also a popular caviar in the U.S.

Cyprinus carpio is the number one fish of Aquaculture.

Also, it is said, Carp do not completely digest their food and their waste contributes heavily to algae.

Yup, they are jumpers. When I had my four old chubs in the fall a couple years ago, I had one of the 7" fish jump at the lid of a 30 gallon aquarium and knock open not only the lid but also the stapler on top that was weighing the lid down. Long story short, put a brick on top of whatever lid you're using and don't keep them with green sunfish that will scare the heck out of them XD.

If your are going to be keeping chubs and suns/gills for anytime more than a couple , I would keep them separated The suns/gills will kill the chubs. I guess the suns/gills prong the chubs with their dorsal fin. You will find the dead chubs will have 3-4 punctures on their bellies. Maybe my live well isn't big enough ? Its a small chest freezer with adjustable temp for making beer Keeps a perfect 67, Which I found to work the best.

My bet is the sunfish are just biting the Chubs. Lepomis can be very territorial and have complex social hierarchies, especially when in small spaces like bins. Most of the time an aggressive sunfish will flare its operculums, erect its dorsal and anal fins, and only use its mouth and head to attack directly by simply charging at the target head-first while its fins and operculums only serve as a display to ward off fish.
