As of to-day the road to the beach is open, but the boat Launch road is closed.Don't know about the spillway rd.,but assume that it is open. Also I called Yellow Creek on Fri., they said there was very little open water.  sam

Thanks for the update Sam. Here's hoping for stable water levels this spring to help the crappies spawn.

    Crooked Creek Lake
    March 28

Wondering about the boat launch? It is still closed. Sections of the lake and boat launch still are ice covered and the lake level is low. Winter has given the maintenance staff some spring cleanup challenges. The maintenance staff needed the lake level drawn down to work on the boat ramp. Once the water rises to a safe launch level and the ice is gone, the launch will open. Please be patient just a little bit longer. And when you do get back on the water be sure to wear your life jacket.

I was curious about the spillway road, wanted to try casting some spinners for musky at the outflow...

The boat launch opened to the public yesterday April 1st

Mags, how far down stream can you walk at the outflow, is it navigable past the fishing deck? I've only stopped at the outflow a few times and it was high, fast and muddy.

We used to fish the whole way down to rt.66,but you had to be careful at places near the shore where there was a lot of silt. You could go up to your knees in it. we used to go there for snapping turtles. When the water is a little high you could go down in a yak or canoe. But otherwise you would ground out in places. There is a little of everything in there as the fish come up from the river to spawn & can't go any farther. I have never seen trout there tho.  sam

Sam, thanks for the insight, I hope to spend some time at the outflow this spring. When it's slow I like to move around so I may try and venture down stream a bit to find some different holes.

Got the boat out for the first time of the year yesterday. Fishing wasn't very good for us. Only a few small fish. Most fish we marked were suspended in deeper water. Only a few smallish gills in shallow.

I also went out for a few hours in the 5-7 pm just to see what the lake was like water temps were anywhere from 56-60*. I worked some shoreline structure, and as fishinguy said only a few small gills, also a few small crappie. My go to deeper spots, were not marking fish and I could not find a school in the short time I was there.

I did see you, not to many boats out there, cool. I was in the little 14ft Navy Blue Shallow V. It was a last minute decision to go out for a bit to get the motor running, the crappie bite should be on in the next week or two.

I either fish up top at the wall or right below and do pretty well for Walleye, Cats, and Smallies.  I seen a few big musky and even a trout before.  As for wading down I know you can get to the island near the dock area but I don't know much about down stream, it's fairly silty as said prior.  But the best i've done from wading is a fair sized smallie (probably 16" at most)  I have better luck on the rocks right near the wall or up on the wall.

Took the boat out for an hour Easter Sunday.    We threw grubs looking to see if crappy we hot yet.  We got no crappy but did manage a few small bass.  I have no idea of water temp, my depth finder did not work for some unknown reason.  Can anyone give me a water temp from this weekend?

When do the crappie typically move into the shallow wooded areas at crooked creek? I've only caught sizeable crappie in open water at crooked, while at other lakes my success comes from fishing downed trees and brush piles closer to shore. The loads of downed trees and brush piles I would think would make for great fishing in the spring, but I usually only get gills, small crappie and the occasional LM.

Fished there Saturday and managed one nice smallie amongst 3 at the outflow...  Then went back up Sunday and we managed 5 walleye, 6 fat smallies and 2 brook trout.  All caught on minnows.  No crappie even though the temp was about 52/53* and I talked with a guy who was fishing the lake and he said he didn't get any crappie, he didn't seem too thrilled about no crappie either.

How's the bite been lately? lake clearing up any after all the rain? I'd appreciate any info as I might head out tomorrow afternoon/evening for a few hours.

Thanks Zippy, between grad school and work around the house I haven't made it out in awhile. Thought I would be able to make it out over the weekend but that didn't work out. Hopefully soon though.
