check on the bucket list...

A few people were asking about this trip...  here is a bit on the fishing, skipping the asshattery
 
Huchen are a rarer form of Taimen
Same fish genetically, just split into 2 populations a long time ago when some mountains were formed
Short 3 month season with a lot of rules/ regulations/ fees/ ect
a week ago I got my shot
 
The area had some insane snow (4ft in 2 days) and then 3in of ice
95%+ of the river was inaccessible due to danger of maneuvering in the snow and you just flat out couldn't access it.  There were only 3 spots (4pools) that we could get to and in these pools the chance that a big fish was out hunting, you didn't spook it, and you could get a clean hookup... made expectations VERY low.  
2 days before arrival i got this picture...

 
Day 1 early morning drive through the mountains

 

 
And insanely long tunnels
this one was over 6miles

 arrive
shake hands
unpack fishing gear
rig up
GO

 

 

 

 

 

 
within the first hour... it happened
a smaller fish
but its a fish

 

 

 
Day 2 
It rained all night..Knock on the door
"sorry my friend... no fishing"
we decide he is going to show me the area... but i'm going to take my gear in case it clears up
 
breakfast

 

 

 
almost "blown out"
"steelhead green" doesn't translate
I want to fish
 

 

 

 

 

 
i managed follows from 2 big fish... one ate the tail, but not a hook
it continued to rain and the season ended on Friday
I got the last fish of the season
 
packed it up and started to long trek home
over some mountains in some sketchy nighttime snow

    How were the acommodations in Slovenia?  Looks like a cool trip even w/o the fishing.

    The guide (required to hire a guide as a foreigner) had 2 really nice apartments that sleep 3 people each
    fully equipped
    clean
    and cheap

    Nice... how large do these fish get as Ive read about siberian taimen and they get rather large

    oh my... that water looks so beautiful!   So are those fed by springs? the water looks warm for all that snow layin around

    Cool photos.  That sucks that you were held back by the guide.  A once in a life trip in the hands of someone scared of a light stain?  Glad that you landed one and had a few other follows.

    I trusted his judgement
    These fish only eat once every 7-10days and there are only 1 or 2 of the large fish (100cm+) per hole
     
    When they come out to eat, they are out hunting... sight casting to these fish is how it is done
    once you spook, you are done
    so you need to see, stalk, and target
    the follows I had were typical of the non-committal fish... and once they didn't take, they usually don't come back around
    Knowing that we were going to fish the same 3 locations as the prior day, fishing to dropping water in the afternoon was the best chance
    I got the eat, but it wasn't a full commit... the other follow and slash was a heart-pumper... a 4ft fish swirlling and slashing like a 10in brook trout... with twice the speed and intensity
     
    Its just a different fish than I knew anything about and i would have traded a smaller 2nd fish for a shot at the big ones (which I got)
     
    a license for a local (225euros) only allows them 15 days of fishing during the 3month season... my guide caught 5 (i think) fish last year
    and he only fishes when the conditions are perfect and when he can get to the best spots.... 2 things that did not line up for me
     
    here is a 114cm fish they go the week before the storm (mine was about 60cm)
    125cm is really the max in this system
    This fish was up in the riffles hunting
    this was in a section that was inaccessible during my time there

    You made the most out of what the conditions handed you.  That is a tough pill to swallow when one makes these types of trips.  We all prepare for the best of weather and more often than not, don't get it.
