New rules for number of hooks on a line

I was reading the new 2014 book that comes with a license and noticed there is no longer a limit on how many hooks can be used on a line.  I have enough trouble fishing three hooks on a sabiki rig but will any one try using a full sabiki rig with 6 hooks or more while fishing for perch on the big lake?

RODS, LINES, AND HOOKS – An angler may use a maximum of three lines fished either by rod or hand when fishing for gamefish, baitfish or both. It is unlawful for a person to fish with more than three fishing rods at a time. There is no restriction on the number of hooks used on each fishing line. All rods, lines and hooks shall be under the immediate control of the person using them.

Huh, I guess they really did make the change.

Like the OP said, three is plenty. I can't imagine baiting six hooks for perch fishing and don't see the need to. I'm guessing the main reason they made the change was for umbrella rigs, but it's just my guess...

How about ice fishing you can catch 6 bluegills at once.....or when your perch fishing you can hook 4 silver bass going in all directions with 2 exposed hooks and those darn things are like razors.....Again the fish commission not thinking things out you are probably right the bass guys put pressure on them for the umbrella rigs...

Yes, so long as they are not left unattended.

One single hook on a tip up is enough for me on a very productive mid- central PA state park lake for Chain Pickerel I frequent, when there's enough ice that is.

Why limit yourself to 6? I plan on using a spreader rig with a 6 hook sabiki on each side!!!!

Check the regs on ice fishing.  They still have hook max.

I guess that means I'll be able to fish a scud under a sucker spawn, under a soft hackle, under a wooly bugger, under a marabou streamer with a strike indicator, on my center pin, so I can get a good drift.

The 6 hook sabikis work very well for bait in the salt. Though, unless you were really into them, 75% of the fish were on one of the 2 bottom hooks. 1 1/2 oz weights may have helped reduce tangles. Other than something like that or an umbrella rig, I don't think any more than 2 is very useful.

Just put a sabiki thru a drift for steel. If they are loaded up you should get 3-6 hookups a cast. Now there's a fight.

I can see reports now. Fished 8 hours. 429 hookups, 80 landed, 53 foul. Sabiki with 50 lb braid and a paddlefish rod. Lots of breakoffs.

Or, a spreader rig.... with 2 umbrella rigs that have 5 sabikis attached to each. 1 good drop and you could get two perch limits.

Ice fishing for smelt is the one place that I thought maybe a 6 hook sabiki rig would be useful.  Guess that's not going to happen.
