A fellow worker flipped this story to me today.  Looks like it has been out there for a year.   If it is true, One nice story for the Holidays!

It indeed is if it is true?  It is amazing what animals will do to survive!
Tuna, thanks for the welcome, but I have posted before and was hoping to make a run up over the Holidays to Pulaski from NJ.  I agree with you on the comments on NY deer.  Saw few on my trips up in October-November to Steelhead fish.  We are overrun by deer in NJ, attached a picture of a 12 pointer taken in NJ over the weekend given to me by my neighbor at work.  Do not know the lucky hunter or where taken but it is a beautiful Buck!     Never posted a picture to the new site so I hope it comes thru

I've seen deer swim in  rivers and lakes, and once  in the ocean in Maine, but never brought on a boat. I've seen the link before, but the joy of getting older and losing your memory  is everything seems like the first time.....  Don't forget to post a report of your trip. The pic didn't appear to me, if you go to the  link posted by the administrators on how to post pics, it's pretty straight forward.  Make sure to open full version instead of the quick reply...

Thank You Fichy!  I always look forward to reading your Posts!   We have a warming front coming into NJ friday  which may melt allot of our  snow.    Was hoping to get a nice layer of ice on the local ponds for jigging by New Years.   Going to play it by  ear with taking a trip to Pulaski over Christmas week.   Looks like there is a bit of a warming font hitting there also at least for a couple of days.   When I was living in Niagara Falls,  I remember reading about an arrest made of a duck hunter who lasso'd a buck swimming  in the river,  out of season.  Sounds like he kept it and got caught.    Any way I think I figured out how to attach the photos of the NJ Buck.   I gave up deer huntinfg in the 90's.    We had a couple  8-10 PT Big Bucks roaming our office property in East Hanover.  In the spring,  I pulled a fawn off a sewer grate  on our street and it returned the favor by coming back to dine nightly in my garden.  Ate everything except the Zuchinni and Purple Kale!
I do not personally know the Hunter  pictured in the photo or where it was taken but is really an impressive Buck!
    Kudo's to the Hunter!

RichW,it's hard to get angry at them for eating the vegs when they're that cute. That big buck reminds me of the one that I saw on my property 10+ years ago,had the same mass and tine length and it's body dwarfed the respectable 10 pt it was seen with.To my knowledge that monster buck was never harvested.Currently there is another bruiser in the area and have n't heard of that one being taken either, now that rifle season is done in my part of Penna. it may live another year.

Jack , I get pizzed when I do all the work in the garden , plant a row of sunflowers then have those four legged ( I use another 4 letter term) decide its time for them to harvest the fruits of my labor. Even tried planting right against the dog fence area , kept the stupid woodchucks away but the deer are smarter. I really need to start thinning the local herd and filling the freezer.

Well I plowed more snow today and sat inside the house playing with ice gear. Wish I was on the ice playing instead but I feel a fever coming on sat .. Screw work I'm going fishing ..
    BTW:
Me and the grandson had venison burgers which I ground with bacon for lunch and it was delicious !!!!!

Rich try repellents on those Sunflower munchers (Mothballs, human hair, cayenne pepper, etc.) or string some line at various height and hang some tin cans with metal bb's inside, when they hit that they take off. Then there is always fencing.
My favorite venison was chip steak sandwiches made from the hind legs.

I erected Stalag 17 around my garden after the deer destroyed everything a few years back.
I enjoy venison stew, chili, marinated & grilled steaks and cutlets made parmigiana style.

Thanks for the suggestions to repel these guys.   Lived  in East Hanover, NJ  since 1986 and this is really the year of the Walking Dead!      More concerned  on the pruning job they did on my 8 Purple Leaf Sand Cherries I put in around the Pool..     Looking at a mesh fence when they get ready to blossom in Spring.

Sorry that I'm going to hijack this thread to bits and still have not looked at the link.. Sorry..
Great pics Rich.. I have a co worker friend (ex-SR fisher) that spends thousands of $$ to hunt Alberta Canada.. He has impressive mounts such as those you posted.. A 22pt, and 19 pt that made my head turn but his best deer to date was a 10 pt at 335 lb weight.. It's all about the trophy for that style hunting as the meat stays in Alberta..
I live on the Hudson River below Albany, have seen deer swim across in the open water and struggle to walk across on the ice, and get sucked under..

    Now the Hijack:
These shots were taken this eve off the front and back porch..
#1 is where I planted a row of sunflowers to give a little camouflage to the fence.. The deer waited until they bloomed then munched them down;; ugh.

#2 is off the back.. My raised beds garden is under those piles of snow.. I have cayenne, jalapeno and bell peppers in the mix.. The Deer avoid them but munch everything else.. Notice all the tracks in the snow.. Yup !! My poor apple trees to the right never stood a chance..

    Ice is nice:
Here is from last Saturday and how we roll:
An 11:00 lunch provided by the friends I fish with:

Jack, the Bar was open and the food great !!!
As we set our tip-ups straight out, it was 3 degs so the heat went on and it became a solo jig.. Don't worry guys I will deploy the big top if you all decide to come have some fun..
The aftermath in front of the stove :

Nice Pics Tuna! I love the Shiner Bock for washing down the Sausage and Peppers!  Have 2 - 6 Packs of "Shiner Family Reunion" in the Fridge.
A good friend of mine from Whippany,  NJ just closed on a Lake House  on Big Lake Sacandaga.      May be taking a poke up there with him in January to try the ice.  Might as well take advantage of that NY License for more than Steelhead.

If you guys ever do a group outing on the Ice, would love the opportunity to jig for a few.  Ice fishing has been very iffy the last two years.

RW- I've been to your neck of the woods, taught at Hanover Park HS a long time ago.  Used to commute from NY and drive by the Nabisco HQ every morning.

    Rich:
Once the big lake trout waters get solid I will be giving a shout out.. Schroon, Lake George and Otsego..
There is very good cheap clean lodging with tons of various hardwater options for those places..
Got to head back to the JOB tomorrow but as said, I hear thoothy critters and pannies calling sat.. Solid 6-8 " ice round here..

TrBum, if you taught ay HP in the late 70's you most likely taught my wife and her brothers.   Nabisco moved me to EH in 79 from the Niagara Falls Shredded Wheat Plant. We are now known as Mondelez International ( Nabisco/Cadbury).   Still at the same place. In the fall, when acorns were dropping i pushed the  fat buck in photo from stuffing his  snout in between chasing does, while walking to our gym.  Lot of the deer run onto our property along the railroad tracks and JCP&L easement from th Pasaic River.
Tuna, will look forward to your ice reports
