What is this?

While hiking/fishing at a local lake I came across this, It looks like a power pack of some kind? They were spread out in different locations all over the hill/shores of the lake.  Any idea what this is and what it is used for?  Thanks in advance

Looks like the Seismology packet transmitters used for the gas/oil exploration.
Look around and you should see some big white trucks with vibrator pads under them driving around.

The trucks send the sound waves into the ground and the packets send the data to a mapping computer.

Erie - If that's the case, that's not good for crooked creek lake. I probably saw 15-20 of these scattered around the lake while hiking on Monday. However I did not see any white trucks around the lake.

Yep, that looks like seismic testing equipment for gas exploration to me.

A few years back they did seismic testing on a property that I hunt.  There was a large truck present; however, it remained stationary for the duration of the project and I believe it simply served as a headquarters for the crew.  They drilled a series of bore holes throughout the property and detonated a charge at the bottom of each hole.  They placed some type of monitors on the surface to record the data.

The crew we spoke to said that the property we hunt was part of a giant effort by Range to survey hundreds of square miles in Allegheny, Butler and Armstrong counties within the next few years.  They haven't drilled on that property yet, nor has there been any indication that they will be drilling anytime soon there.
