fishingood, is that move designed to tighten the throat of the brown trout once it has passed on? I promise not to tell your FFPA buddies your secret. I would say scout's honor, but we all know how worked up chartist gets when you mention boy scouts.... Is it me, or is any effort made to act civilized considered liberal? What is wrong with agreeing that treating your sport with respect is ok? You figure out why there is a PETA yet? Chartist, they probably all know that you prefer well kept men, so they figured they would get a good sweaty ball foam going, hoping to avoid you approaching them in the parking lot.

I think the study is interesting, but as someone pointed out before this got hijacked....maybe it was the science team's method of handling them and inserting the tracking beacon that caused more of the mortality than simply handling the fish. I have done some tagging studies where the fish were out to the water for over a minute then just tossed back in....i think the mortality rate would be high. One of the guys i work with at BP has a great way of explaining how you should treat a fish you just want to get a pic with and release.....when you pull that fish out of the water start holding your breath (and keep in mind the fish is already "winded" from the fight)......it kind of gives perspective. Then there is the whole issue of their protective slime....but lets save that for another day.

chartist I have witnessed more camouflage wader wearing fishermen in Erie than anywhere else in the civilized world.
And your point is? I have a Simms wading jacket that is Camo... your precious Simms makes camo fishing gear what????? I would tend to think Camo would help you blend from a fish vision.

Wonder if that same logic can be applied to the Lip rippers... Have your buddy grab you by the lower lip with his boga grip and try to pick you up while you dance the twist... Geez Chartie didn't know you hung with the camo clad gillblaster croud......

So you admit that Erie is part of the civilized world? That's a start, very encouraging. Thank you.

Dude, you cant roll cast a switch rod 20 ft, your video proves it. I know camo wearing guys who could make you look like a fool with a fly rod. I bet I can cast my 2wt farther that any rod you have, I'll even wear full camo to do it. You sir are officially the biggest moron on this forum and I've been around here for 12 yrs. Congrats

guess thats why he "drives right past" the erie streams on his way to the SR, specifically the DSR, which did come out with a rule prohibiting camo wader wearing and it is enforced by their ever watchful crew who only allow snagging and dragging on salmon not trout because to do otherwise would not be civil too much

How resilient are Erie Steelhead to handling and creek conditions ? Much more than we think ! Finding a dead Steelhead in the creeks is a rarity over the years I've fished. Nothing wrong with proper handling of fish being released but these fish are much tougher than we think. I took this picture back in the 80's along Elk Creek above I-90. My friend caught this severely wounded hen Steelie around late October. It looked like a prop hit as a best guess. We took a photo and released the fish and let nature take it's course. Several weeks later while fishing about a half mile upstream I caught and released the same fish ! I doubted that fish would have survived a day after my buddy released it the first time. These fish are tough creatures.......

Hmmm... I wonder if the tagging of the fish had any effect on their demise. I assume introducing a foreign object into the fishes body would be more detrimental that contact with their natural environment. I would also assume they also took measurements and weighed them before releasing them as well. Perhaps this was a factor in their demise. I bet the number of fish killed from not using a net/ improper handling pales in comparison to the ones that die from litter/ tainted runoff, eating non-food bait(trout beads, plastics), and getting tangled in discarded fishing line. If your truly that concerned for the fishes well being, I'd start by not catching them in the first place. Hell they aren't really even supposed to be there in the first place. We put them there to catch.

I caught one that was missing 90% of his tail last year. It appeared to be a fairly old injury as well.

I can honestly say that I am able to count the number of dead steelhead I have seen floating in the tribs on one hand. I have fish the streams between 25 and 35 days per year for the last 5 years. I really think steelhead are a lot more resilient then we give them credit.
