Finally got it done..I think

My 22 year quest to hook a steelhead is finally over....I think... A few days ago, while fishing Upper Elk Creek, I came upon an inviting run. I tied on a white wooley worm and procceeded to swing it threw the tailout. Suddenly, I felt a jolting{?} strike, set the hook and , after a spirited battle, landed a steelhead....Maybe... No one was arround for a hero shot so i nerviously pulled out my tape measure. 6 and a halfinches, measured down the back. I always measure fish down the back cause it sounds better. After relaying my tale to a few other fisherman, I was told I had caught a smolt. Heck, it looked like a steelhead..My question is...do they count as steelhead or do i have to continue my quest??...WF...They do fight like demons

If the mouth is smaller than the diameter of the yellow rope, then it don't count.

A smolt is just a little steelhead.  By catching one, that makes you some sort of achiever.  Perhaps an under achiever.

If it was raining, you broke the drought, if not, well, not.

BTW, did it run you into the backing?

I hate to be mean, but If it has taken you 22 years to hook and land a steelhead. I suggest trying another sport or take lessons from the russians

I'm not a quitter. I have been close, numerous times, to having a bite. And, no Dars, the fish stayed in the run and the backing stayed on my reel. And I'll take any type of achieving....WF...wasnt sure for a while, though, that I could contain it.

Congratulations. 22 years well spent. WF.
Now, see if you can catch one half that size in November.
Everyone catches big ones, so catching a big one is no big deal.
    My smallest is 3 1/2".
