998,999..........

Thursday was pretty rugged, with the rain and closed mouth fish. All tricks and no treat.  Highlight was fishing with Tuna and  Clint's great response to a question about tribs to use as an alternate. Tuna seemed stuck in ice mode this morning so I went off on my own to check out the muddy creeks and ended up where I've found fish in high water before. They were there.  Left early, but for me way worth the trip to have finally found some.   Credit goes to Nancy for busting through the flooded puckerbrush to net this fish and do camera duty.  Can't wait to go back in a few weeks and for a major assault at Thanksgiving.  I don't blame HT for being a little discouraged. I watched him make endless good drifts yesterday in places that should have held fish for not even a tug.  Next time, it'll be his turn.

Beautiful fish!  And kudos to your wife, mine's 25 year old waders are still nearly brand new.

Great job man. Seems like today they were more blown out than the river.   I do not think I have ever seen them that high.   You are a trooper and more so to your wife for netting that brute.   What's mine tomorrow was yours today I think, so I am glad you had a good one and got into fish.   I should start to learn to fish this higher stuff  as I know the crowds are lower and the fish are still there.

I can say this.clint. It wasn't much fun in the higher waters and the crowds were the same or maybe worse because the spots became limited.
I'm pretty sure Charlie caught that fish in the same place we pounded it to death the day before and got skunked

100 yds. up. It needed the extra bit of water for them to slide  over and hold.
People are taking huge risks crossing, too. We watched some guys crossing a cable at the staircase that was ridiculous. One little slip and  the seagulls might have had a different pale flesh to gnaw on.  I expect the winter will remain the same.  I did manage to learn a few things this trip about high water.  Another spot or two that can work, and you can get there with tough wading, not INSANE wading.  In some ways, I'm glad for the high water, as some of the traffic may get discouraged by the lack of available  fish.  Three feet of white stuff and single digits will tell the tale.  I know they don't fight like they do right now, are  less pretty (but not always) , but if the fishing is peaceful and I can concentrate on fishing, not the crowd around  me, it can be idyllic.  Or brutal.  HT's lakers are looking  lots more appealing, though they haven't quite got me hooked yet.

Cable ? If it were a cable I might have hooked the full body harness up and tried it.. Looked more like 1/4" yellow rope..LOL Yup crazy dudes , at least they had PFD's on, what ever good that would have done..

Getting big lakers 100' deep on a 26" rod without a soul around.. They sure fight WAY better in the winter then summer, Fun stuff !!!

I'm not quite done with the steel yet though, I need redemption and pretty soon brown town will come into the mix :)

White water friends of mine swear by PFCs.
They allow the search team to locate the bodies easier.

I've done my "face-first horizontal wade with breast stroke and sputter" for this year!  This week looks like Columbus Day II as far as room availability around town, so I don't think many guys are blowing off 2000+, but I may have to as I get kind of claustrophobic when it is too crowded.  Back to 1500, maybe I'm in for some of the hiking spots we looked at lately, but at and over 2000, ANY wading is INSANE wading, which is also what DEC is saying on their hotline.
