Problem with the Fish tag idea

I saw posted on the reports page that it was suggested to utilize a tag system just like hunting does. I do like the theory of this but would be loop holes around it as well. Same as hunting I know a guy who buys his uncle's and wife licenses so he can harvest additional deer. I also would be willing to bet it would happen with fishing if there were a tag to bag system or trading and bartering. Plus I know it happens that certain guys keep fish for others. So a certain person gets his 6-9 fish every outing because his friend and son dont keep them for themselves. (You know who you are if you read this)I would think a soft harvest date from Aug to Oct 31 of 1-2 fish limit and then to 3  rest of the season would be more impactful or make certain sections of creeks C&R. Just my 2 cents.

Feel free to bash me for my opinion as this forum is good for that if nothing else

I'm not sure if you're tagging idea is too keep the numbers of fish up for return the following year. If so the erie tribs get stocked with 1.2 million smolts per year. I don't think anyone has to worry about numbers. Keep as many as you want.

Not bashing you, whisperer. I think you are offering a solution (that's good), but the whole fish tag thing is a solution that is looking for a problem.

But here is my problem with fish tags:

It's a dumb idea.

If the PFBC makes us do something more, they will make us pay for it too.

They need to stop making fishing complicated.

There's plenty of fish. I think stocking less would curb some meat hunters. Limit of one or two would do the same. C&r sections on a few streams north of rt 5 might be nice too. But I think its fine just the way it is.

Delayed Harvest / fly fish only / C&R sections might help in getting some landowners to open their lands.  From the sounds of the PFBC approach, they're not really looking to give options.  In that sense, I doubt they would even consider anything like that.

As for the tags, Cbeagler summed it up.

I must say I'm a little offended & disturbed by the comments made by Cowboy in his recent post. First of all who is he to use the term "meat hunter" implying that he is not as he stands proud holding a limit on a rope... Please define "meat hunter" cowboy. I have caught & released thousands of steelhead over the years, I have also kept several as my wife & kids enjoy the tasteful resource that is made possible, maintained & regulated by the state! Am I a meat hunter? I have a friend that keeps a limit everytime out? Is he a meat hunter? I bet if you compare myself, my friend & cowboy, we all put our waders on the same way, paid for the same license & stamp, we all have fished the same hole, tied the same fly & enjoyed the same fight from each fish... Is there really a difference? I think not... I think the underlying issue you have is the crowd, by creating a $100 tag you get less fishermen, opening up more space for yourself as you once had. Is that sportsman like? Chase away others by making it even more expensive to accommodate yourself? FYI the when calculating smolt counts the state calculates mortality & harvest rates in the quantity to be stocked, I bet if you lost half the fisherman you'd lose half the fish...

the most humane thing that could happen to Pa trib fish is to be harvested

not so sure that would make much difference,  Pork
Most of the steelie C&R guys are C&R because steelies taste like crap to them
(I'm one of 'em)
and have said many times it's good thing Steelies don't taste like perch or walleye

so I'm thinking the percentage of jamokes wouldn't be  much different be they C&R  or rope 'em and smoke 'em

One thing that might help, is a lottery/quota  system on sensitive areas   .
Limit some spots to "X" amount of anglers pr day

The wardens don't have enough manpower to catch the snaggers, litters, tresspassers, Why give them a new law to enforce? Especially a stupid law. C N R is a personal choice, I personally release fish because I don't want to deal with cleaning fish when I get home when I could be having a martini.

There's a reason to release wild fish. that doesn't apply to Pa.

maybe they should try a lottery system just like they have in elk county for the elk hunts.
