BLOOD SUCKING PARASITES!!!!!!
Just a reminder that the ticks are still out. I was just down at Racoon with my wife doing some leaf peeping along Rt. 5 and had to get out of the Jeep to answer answer nature's call. As we were driving out I found a deer tick crawling on my hand. Yeeeeesh.

They are out in force in many of the places I've been hunting the last couple of weeks.

Was stationed at Ft. Meade, MD back in '73 and '74. huge tick area. hated 'em. fished for bass in alot of the ponds in the area and would have to check for ticks after every trip. after getting back to the barracks and checking and showering I was satisfied there weren't any ticks on me. jumped in the sack. woke up the next morning with a fat, blood engorged tick crawling out of my ear. to this day, this disgusts me to no end!

Yep, same here. Got some on my hand while hunting the other night. Be sure to check yourself, friend had a bullseye rash from one dug in his leg.

Hopefully he is on antibiotics now if it was recent. Daughter had two embedded in her chest this summer after a weekend in Clarion Co. 2 week course of AB's for her as a preventative measure. I keep checking and have been lucky so far. None that I have been able to see. The skeeters still love me though!

As usual cbeagler has spot on useful information. I was actually going to post this myself. I found 5 on my dog yesterday, and a few of them had the bullseye. She has been treated for lyme in the past, but it looks like shes going to need another test.

my parents live near busy run battle field, and pretty much every time they take my dog for a walk there during the fall, she ends up with a few ticks

beaver county is just loaded with them also, can't do anything outdoors with out the buggers getting on you, spray your dog down good before you take him out to hunt, found a spray at tractor supply that seems to work good, and is reasonable in price, also do the topical on the back of the neck once a month for him, help a buddy out he can't do it. get yourself and him checked on a regular bases , lyme desease is easier to treat in the early stages. had to put him on antibiotics earlier this year, he showed a slight indication of lyme in a blood sample.

Weird for me, skeeters love me but I have been lucky with the ticks, so far (banging head on wood). I have been archery hunting northern Allegheny, southern Allegheny, mid-Allegheny and western Westmoreland counties. I guess some spots are just thicker with them.

Went out hunting this morning...thus far I've not had any on me while waterfowling (in high grass). Today I was in fairly mature forest and picked at least 20 off my jeans and hands! Everywhere I sat against a tree, within minutes I'd see one, and then when I checked my jeans, I'd get 2-3 more that were climbing up. Both kinds. Creepy.

Wish I would have read this before fishing this past weekend. Went to the gravel pit, came home with one on my outer fleece and one on my inner shirt. Figured I had better check my gear, and -sure enough- one in my trunk on my pack. I've had nightmares every night this week. Disgusting creatures. Be careful out there!

Grouse hunted with my dog all last week in Marienville, Cooks Forest, Cherry Grove etc... Ticks everywhere! Pulled at least 50 off my dog in those 4 days. Luckily I don't think one had bit in yet. We kinda anticipated there being a lot so we gave her an early application of her tick and flea repellant

I've pulled so many of them off of me over the last two years that I honestly don't enjoy hunting as much as I used to. I always feel like things are crawling on me. That's because they usually are. Last weekend I got out of the woods and undressed on the porch, except for my underclothes. I left them on the porch. I got in the house and felt something crawling on my neck. Tick #1. Then I felt something crawling on my back. I called my wife in to look. Tick #2. I was definitely freaking out by then. I was on my way upstairs to shower and felt something crawling on the back of my leg. Tick #3. I showered and had my wife check every square inch of my body. She went through my hair with a comb (which doesn't take much time anymore... I don't have a lot left to go through). We didn't find any more, but I "felt" ticks crawling on me all night. This happens every time I go in the woods. Last year was even worse. I'm going to have to get some of that permethrin (sp?). My 70 year old aunt is being treated for Lyme right now. I hope we get a very cold winter this year that kills a lot of those nasty buggers off.

Permethrin spray is what ya want. Spray on clothes an wait till it dries. Good for up to 6 washes or 6 weeks. Good against ticks and mosquitos an chiggers. I use the Sawyer brand, 24 oz for $16. You can watch em crawl on your clothes an then fall off dead, good stuff haha. CDC recommended

Thanks for the bug dope info. Just make sure you keep the permetherin away from cats. The stuff attacks their nervous system and kills them miserably in short order.

Actually the last bottle of it I got was a wally world. Its only the 12 oz bottle for like $10. I was leery of putting it on my clothes at first due to it being able to harm some animals and kill others but doesn't have same effect on most mammals. The past few years changed my mind when my buddies who use it had no ticks an I was covered in em. I figure my exposure to the chemical for the total time im hunting during a season still has to be better than Lyme Disease. I still don't put it on my socks or thermals but some people do
