Fly tieing frustrations. What's yours?
The one thing that frustrates me about fly tieing was the bobbin. I think I may have found the answer. I wasn't using the Rite Bobbin. Check this out. http://ritebobbin.com/ Wow, five models to choose from. May just have to buy myself an early Christmas gift.
You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

+1 on the dislike for Rite bobbins. Never tried the C&F or MP though...I went from the very basic Griffin to the Rite and didn't like it, so I haven't really tried any other "high end" bobbins. Is it worth the extra cost? Spinning deer hair. Yes.

Guess I'm just old school. Tried the Rite - didn't like it. I spent the $ and bought a Petitjean and it sits there not being used - seems to fray the thread in smaller diameters - especially when you spin the thread to flatten the GSP. So - I tie with the Griffins. Just never felt a need to try anything else.

My frustration is that my flies are ugly and they don't catch fish. :) that's not entirely true. Most are ugly and most catch fish. I use a $4 bobbin from gander and once I got the tension tweaked just right I no longer have issues breaking or fraying thread. But all you guys are on a WAY different level than I am. I haven't even figured out what's wrong yet to even be able to complain...

I received a Norvise bobbin system last Christmas. Once I got use to it, I love the way it works. I now prefer it over any other bobbin I have. Again, it does take time getting use to the spring operated system.

If tying streamers or where minimal thread wraps aren't critical.. spin your bobbin so the thread thickens a bit. it will help with that or when you put too much pressure on the thread by accident. Or jus tbe more careful!

Having to pick up all my stuff when I'm done tying because my wife wants to use the dining room table to eat. Not having enough time or the right weather conditions to swing all the little tube "treasures" I tie all winter long. Being too cheap to buy a JC cape. Having to drill out standard brass cones to fit tubes because I can't see spending twice as much for cones drilled to fit tubes. Glen giving away all my flies at the one flies or trib parking lots. Just kidding, ;-) give a lot of them away myself. Love it when I hear someone did well on the sthd with one of my pet patterns like the Erie shiner on a tube.
