Fly Rod help

I'm not much of a flyfisherman but I want to buy a new fly rod due to the lovely girlfriend wanting to do some Steelhead fishing..

Im looking for a 10' 7/8 weight.. In that general area.. Something cheaper.. 100$ price range.. I looked at the Redington's but only seen them in 9'..

Used would be fine as well if anyone knows someone who is selling one..

Just looking for some more opinions on other rods you guys would think would work good for me..

Thanks, Ed

If it's gotta be ten foot, I'm not sure you're going to get one from a decent name in your price range, even used.

As far as new rods, imho the best bang for your buck in a steelhead rod is 10' 7wt Echo Ion, but I think they're around $190.

Doesn't have to be, just liked using my buddies 10' when I was using it... Would like to be able to use it for big browns up in NY. 9' would probably work as well.. Im not too picky

Eman, I got a 10' 7wt combo from cabela's for a little over $100 5-6 years ago that has worked just fine for me. I know that there are better rods out there but this one has done fine for me so far & I have no complaints.
Good luck.

I know what you mean.  You can make just about anything work, but if you can get exactly what you want, so much the better.

This summer I got a Cabela's TLr 10' 7wt. It was on sale for $99.99, but now they bumped it up to $149.99. Haven't had the chance to use it for steelhead yet but it worked great for carp and bass so far. Not a great rod, but for the price it's a good buy.  Look forward to trying it out for steel, only used 9 footers in the past.

Also check out the Redington Pursuit which comes in a 10' 7wt. Heard good things about it and I think it costs around $120

I bought the Echo Ion 10" 7 wt for $100 from him for my son. It looks brand new. I saw it on Craig's List. Can't wait to see my son use it for steelhead.

Not sure if you already picked something up, but take a look at Redington. I love them. I have two #8's and two #6's you don't get much m ore bang for your buck. Inexpensive, awesome quality, and A lifetime warranty to boot. I am partial to the Red Fly's and RS series

Last year I Searched 10" 7 wt fly rod on E-Bay and ended up with a $300.00 plus rod for $70.00. Also check "Leland Upgrade" , they sell used high end Fly equip. on consignment.    Glen

"best on the market"? thats a stretch!
I couldn't find anything about themand according to their website... they aren't even in "the market"… they are sold in 1 Shop and off their site Companies like "Shadow" are buyer beware
cheap imported asian products with no real company backing them… just re-selling something ordered off the internet

For that price you can get a quality rod from a real company that actually develops a product i'd stick with an established company with a good reputation and you know will be open in 6mo+ in case you have a issue and need to utilize customer service/ warranty

They just launched a few months ago, they are a new company. Ive had many fly rods and this is by far the best I have owned. Resell products? I suggest going and trying to find anything close to their rod designs, you wont find them. Ive tried. I do notice a lot of companies reselling the same products, even Orvis selling the same fly boxes,etc.. The fly shop they are in is a pro shop and only sells Sage and Orvis. I own the 7wt and its a heck of a rod. Do some research, every review on their product line has been positive. Check out the rod see whats best for you. As for customer service... i waited 3 months to get my sage vantage 7wt back all because they were to cheap to send me a new rod instead of a repair. I recommend the shadow rod as someone who has fished it..orvis clearwaters are a good value as well!

- reselling yes… they don't make the rods… they order them from factories that mass produce them in asia and resell them.
- what exactly is a "pro shop"?
- I did a search, there isn't 1 unbiased real review

PLUS the original poster was looking for $100 fly rod… so regardless, its 150 over budget

I can think of a dozen under $200 rods I would buy before even considering a shadow.....jus sayin.
Whatever blows your dress up and makes you happy I guess is all that matters.

Good luck finding any rod that is 100% made in one specific part of the world. You think the components on any rod are 100% US just because someone wraps them onto a blank here in the US?

Most major companies are moving their production overseas. Hardy rods are produced over seas, as well as echo, TFO, and other major contenders in fly fishing. I myself do not base my opinion on the location in which a product is made but rather the product itself. We live in a world where overseas manufacturing dominates the market. I myself enjoy not having to pay $800 for a rod just because its "made in the USA." Even though its really not truly 100% made in the USA considering certain parts are mass produced overseas.

Im basing my opinions on actually fishing the rod and owning one. Sorry I did not see the $100 cap the poster had.

In your price range I suggest a Orvis clear water rod. Its a bit cheaper and I have a few myself!

What are you talking about?

No one mentioned made in USA or sourcing of materials... Rather generic mass produced and resold Asian products

Again your suggestion (Clearwater) is 125 over budget and is a poor choice at that price point

Can you please send me the link to any other fly rod that looks remotely close to shadows "generic" products.

I guess buying a rod as light as an $800 helios2 with two tip sections and lifetime warranty for $250 is easy to come by these days LOL. Please send me the link.. Id like to see the rod you've found that looks like any of Shadows current models or even offer the features they do.

Not sure if you have ever fished a clear water but they are decent rods for $200. Seems like your basing opinions on products you've never even seen or fished.

1. Mass produced? What do you think every major company does, they mass produce their products.

2. Resold asian products.... TFO, Echo, Hardy, ETC ETC.. Welcome to most products in the world these days.

Have you even suggested anything to the poster or have you just ran down other suggestions on products you have no first hand knowledge of.

I learned back when I got back into fly fishing that I would not buy a rod untill I casted it first. Not all rod feel the same to everyone.

i've fished a clearwater... it wasn't fun
for $225 get a TFO BVK

TFO, Hardy, Echo, reddington, ect are manufactured in asia... yes.  But done in their own shops and to their specs, designes, and quality tolerances
not mass produced white-labeled products that are resold
