MY 13yro?

my son has been on my tail to take him up for some fishing.  he's never fished for kings or anything real big for that matter.  not wanting to join the circus, would this weekend be a wise decision? and would there be a possibility of getting into a fish or two? also would he have a better chance at the DSR since crowds are limited?   would like to make his trip a memorable one and having some bonding time!
any suggestions will be appreciated.  thanks all.

If you don't mind spending the money and if you're not against the politics.. bring your son there. He will get in for free as well. This will be a very busy weekend coming up and crowds will be thick in most spots ...except for maybe 3fans secret spot ;)

Hey Dime, thanks for the reply.  money is not the problem if I can put him on a fish! personally I'm against having to pay.  I just don't want to **** any neighboring anglers off, because my son lacks the skill for this type of fishing.  I will do my best to teach him fishing etiquette.
Now if you just coax 3fans into sharing, he'll make a young mans trip  a most memorable one. :)

Jrb, are you familiar with salmon fishing in the salmon river? Do you know spots in particular? Even 3fans secret spot can get pressure during the busy season which we are amongst now. Time and place is everything as I've driven that with any recent report. For instance, look at clients report, based on what he saw there were no fish up there, meanwhile 3fans buddy did good... I slammed them this weekend as well... today my friend fished ball park from afternoon til just now and it was pretty dead down there. Whether you choose dsr or not...send me a pm on Friday and I may be able to help you out or give you some advice...

Dude don't worry aboutr ping anyone off because your son doesn't know what he is doing.
Most of the people there don't.
And all of the people were clueless at some point.
    Be sure to be polite.
Ask if it would be OK to fish near someone that is doing good.
    Don't just crowd.
Ask questions of successfull people (some will be flattered and only Dbags would not want to at least give some quick tips to a 13 yo.
Go have a good time (dsr ifyou can hack it) and make some memories for you and your son.

    ^^^^^^
After the first week of Sept there are crowds.   Usually where the people are is where the fish are.  Can you find some secluded spots with minimal pressure?   Sure, but be prepared to walk a bit and even then..........

If you go during the week you will have a better chance of decreased crowds.

There are no "secrets"  on this river.

There farther down you are the fresher the fish and the more apt to hit.  The farther up you are fish will hit out of aggression and to crush (not eat) others eggs for survival of the fittest.

It is time and place now  as fish are moving on up to hit the redds.  Could see hundreds go by could see none.   Later in the season when they get ripe you can predict a bit better as they get on gravel.

I am not qualified to give info as my luck with these things is hit or miss too, but most of the fun is getting out and enjoying yourself so that's what I do

Thanks to all for the words of encouragement.   I have fished for Kings up there before, so yes I am familiar with the river and a few spots to hit this time of year. I'm more into Steelies though, prefer the cooler temps along with less crowds.  As with any fishing timing is everything.  I'm hoping the fish gods smile upon my son this Saturday and give him a hugh thrill.
I paid to fish the DSR, in order to give my son a better chance. Geeze the price sure has gone up. I thought 20.00 use to be a lot?   In any event it will be a memorable time for him as well as myself.
DIME, I will hit you up on Friday! thanks for the offer.

    Thanks again to all.

My son had a great time upon the river.  we fished the DSR on Sat,  didn't hook into anything unfortunately but from what I could not many others either.   went upriver to a few spots, Pineville, rt2a, ballpark, no luck.  despite his disappointment he fished very hard and would not give up.  Gotta love that kid!   We hit the ballpark Sunday morn, a very small pod came through around 10am he just wasn't lucky enough to get a hit.  all in all it was still alot of fun watching a first timer enjoy the river.

Dime: I tried to pm on friday but this new format kept denying me to do so? as you can tell from the new screen name.   formally JRB327.

Johnny, sorry to hear that your son did n't get into any,but good to hear son and dad had a good time.
If you get up there with your boy next week or the week after there should be many more fish thru out.
