WT for steel?
Hello Members, I recently purchased a new Sage 5WT from a local retailer. I purchased with the intent of using it for trout season and the occasional panfish. Is a 5 wt to light of a rod for landing steelhead? Hope every1 has a great season and is getting excited about the cooler temps! I know I am!

Yes, too light. It can be done, but it's a pain in the****to the user, hard on the fish because it takes so long to get them in & a pain in the****of everyone fishing near you because it takes so long to land a fish.

+1 I used a 5wt my first season. I wanted to catch one so badly, and then when I finally did, I was so overwhelmed I almost couldn't wait to get it off of the line again. 6wt is doable, 7wt is probably better, 8wt might be a tad overgunned, but still okay, 9wt is too much.

A 5 wt is the lightest I would go with for steelhead, and even that will leave you seriously underpowered in most situations. I used to fish with a 5/6 weight, and I caught fish, but dragged the fights out longer than needed, and lost more fish than I should've. I bumped up to an 8 weight last year, in order to have a rod more applicable for steelhead, and to diversify my rod selection a bit. It was a great decision, and allowed me to control fish much more..
In particular, I selected a Cabela's store brand combo, the Cabela's Three Forks Prestige combo, got it out the door, rod, reel, line, and all for $89.99

IMHO, a 10' 7 wt is the way to go...

I use a 10' 7 wt now, but I have a 9' 8 wt for those rare occasions that there are more fish at Walnut than there are fisherman.

I aint never seen you hook a steelhead WF , its all a lie ;)
NOW to answer / add to the question , I use a St. Croix 9'6" 6wt , It works just fine for me but ideally a 7wt would be the right rod for steelhead. IMO

Your correct Deetz, nobody has ever seen me hook one. Maybe this year.....WF...5wt is a little lite,not enough azzz there on a nice fish. 7wt is perfect.
