Casting Spoons at Walnut
Hey guys, a buddy of mine went up to Walnut on Monday with 4 of his friends. All of them came back with limits of steel. I told him it was too early, but he said that he wanted to give it a try. He stopped by my house late last night and showed me his fish. They were all fresh chrome. I can't believe they are staging already. He said you had to cast out pretty far to get them and if you didn't get hit on the way down or in the first ten feet, you weren't going to get hit at all. Makes me wish I had called off of work to go with him. He said they had the place to themselves too. I think I'm gonna try it this weekend. Looking at the weather, it should be awesome fishing on Saturday.

They were standing on shore casting into the mouth of the creek, so it shouldn't be long before they are up the stream. They were using spoons mostly. I think they were lil Cleos. All of this cooler weather that we've had must have gotten their clocks all messed up. I bet at night they are all swimming up there and then swimming back out at daybreak. If I were closer, I'd be night fishing tonight.

I know all of us(you and me included) have been joking around about the steelhead running and whatnot, but is this fo real? I'm not really surprised though, but it's interesting hearing about them this early. Regardless, I'm not gonna spend the gas $$ and make the 73hr trek to stekHead Alley to fish for the stupid stockies until late Sept at the earliest

Troutguy, LOL. Nah, just playin' dude. It's only the second week of August. We have plenty of time before the steel shows up in force. I didn't think anyone would take it seriously. hahaha

Just saw your posts(posted while I was typing). Haha yeah I kinda knew it wasn't real but since your post kinda seemed serious(compared to others) so I figured I'd play along a little......I'm sure there could have been a few lurkers who believed you though Now is it too early to start doing the rain/snow dance??

My earliest ever steel was caught on August 9th caught casting spoons in front of Trout Run. I'm guessing if you stood out there along shore early in the morning you would see some jumping. However, I'm guessing there's not a bunch around.

Last year around mid August I think there were a few steelies electrofished in an Ohio River, so you never know when some might decide to come in and check the streams out. I've been itching to hit the rivers/streams since the day after I last fished for them in April!

LOL! I'd say if you spent enough time casting spoons from shore, you'd catch one. You're definitely not going to set the water on fire though.

I spent the last two mornings at Trout Run. I did see a few fish jump and one chase some shiners. In 3 1/2 hours of fishing I did not see one fish hooked from spoon casters. I spent at least an hour and a half at Walnut Saturday evening and saw no fish jump. There are some fish around, just not a lot of fish around. BTW, I took a 14" brown on Joe's fly at 5:46 this morning. That was the only trout I saw caught all weekend.

spent the weekend in erie with the family. stopped by walnut, trout run, and elk. no fish in trout run, didnt see any in walnut but im sure they are around. Saw some fish rising/randomly jumping in elk, didnt fish it, but did see a couple of guys there, they both said there were a few steelies in. I thought it was interesting.

Plenty of other good fishing right now elsewhere, and plenty of time later for steel.
