patterns for stockies.

I'm pretty new to flyfishing and I recently picked up an orvis superfine 2 wt rod,  so my question is for anyone who can help,  what are some good patterns to use to catch stockies?  Yup, stockies. Thats pretty much all the fishin I'll do with that rod until I can get out to some natives.  My guess is they'll pretty much hit anything but if I can get some input from experienced anglers and narrow it down to a couple of patterns so I dont have to lug as much out on the stream.  So far I'm set on taking san juan worms. Any suggestions are much appreciated. thanx.

Wolly buggers are a must in the basic olive, black and white colors.  Size 10s are a good place to start with them.  Peach glo bugs in a size 14 to 16 are another must have if you are fishing rainbows, pinks another color that produces quite well.  Hares ear nymphs in size 12 to 16 in olive, brown and black are another place to start.  These are all basic patterns to start with, after you get some fish under your belt you can expand in any directions and will probably carry dozens of different patterns.. Good luck!

mayfly nymphs--pheasant tails, hares ears, copper johns, or anything that looks similar in sizes 12-18
egg patterns--suckerspawn, blood dots, ect in sizes 12-18
Caddis patterns--tan and olive pupae, green weenies
    As mentioned above wooly buggers

I would try stocking your box with these first and as Avid mentioned you can build on these as you go.

during the early season when the stockies are still used to bait i use these patterns. latex caddis #12 and #14. they look pretty much like a maggot.
tie them fatter and longer and they'll look like a wax worm. a swannundaze maggot pattern works well also. i tie a mealworm pattern that works on stocked rainbows and brookies. if i come up with a camera i'll post a picture.

    swannundaze maggot #12/#14 curved hook
    tan thread
    body; white chenille
rib: white or transparent swannundaze. this is the original pattern but i rib it with white floss.

Since you lack dead drift experience im going to mention that you try leadwing coachman wet flies. Not so that you sound like a rookie but your lack of a good drift will most likely help in this situation. Bet it would be close to your number one producer as a fly your first year with stockies, just let it swing in the current.

For the first week, and particularlly the first day, or two after a stocking, some kind & color of yarn on a hook. Or pretty much anything that looks like it might possibley, sort of, look like some kind of bug. Fresh stocked pelletheads ain't that bright.
