Collecting Ideas and thoughts for 2013 "One Fly"

Well guys, I thought I would throw a line out there to collect your thoughts on doing the One Fly again this year!

It is hard for me to go around and ask businesses for Donations and Give Aways being that I am from the Southern Part of the state!
I was hoping that some of you could throw some ideas at me for any changes or ways to generate more participation from the businesses up around Erie.
I am hoping that a few of the guys from the local Erie area may be able to work with me to spread the word and generate a few of the businesses up there to participate this year.

If you guys have any ideas / suggestions / please reply to this thread or PM me!
All ideas and suggestions are welcome!!!

BTW, It's Looking like Saturday, October 20th for 2013!!!!!!!!!!!

    Rick,
thank you for organizing last year's and getting the ball rolling on this years One Fly.  My suggestion is, don't worry about getting businesses involved.  Let's fish, then eat together afterwards, that's it.  If you want to keep the spirit of the original competition going, let it be for bragging rights, no need for prizes, speeches or games.
Not sure if i can come due to our 4th kid due Oct 13th.  But if he is born a week or so beforehand i will be there.

I'm going to echo the first two sentiments and follow it up with another thought:

I attended only one One Fly (2011), the last of its kind.  My son and I had a blast, but I was there to put faces with names and personally meet some guys who were extremely instrumental in getting me started in Fly Fishing.  I also noticed that a lot of people who signed up were seldom heard from again after the event, leading me to believe that they were in it for what they could get, not what they could get out of it.  And tenured participants made repeated comments how the event was "getting out of hand."

I won't participate nor will I encourage others to go.  I certainly won't discourage them, either.  But think on this:  If this thing gets too big, which was never its founders' intentions, you're going to have problems.  Try as you might to keep it a friendly, relaxed, "Meet, Greet, and Eat" event where the goal is fellowship and not a competition, invariably some dunderhead's going to insist that he was cheated out of something and raise Hell.  Making it a steelhead extravaganza's going to bite you right in your well-intended azz.

Whenever there's something for someone to win, there's also something for someone to lose.  Keep it small.  Keep it simple.  Or just don't bother.

"For the supreme test of a fisherman is not how many fish he has caught...but what he has caught when he has caught no fish." - John H. Bradley

I am game for the fish, eat, meet idea. The give aways are great, don't get me wrong, i have won in the past and it was fun to win but I would readily go just to hang out, fish, eat, and learn! The games are fun and I encourage them to continue but as for the drawings, I would be just as happy without them! I would really just like for once to get on the board!

    Rick,
I've been coming to these events for the past few years. I've always had a blast and can't wait for the next year's event. I must agree with the others that it is getting too big. I felt last year, that there were too many people there only for the prizes and not for the true meaning of the event (getting to meet everyone, fishing, bragging, educating, etc.) It's becoming more of "what can I get" than "what can I give." This is nothing against you, you organized it because of what it was and what it did for you and your boy, and you wanted a way to give back. That's why I feel like I always need to donate what I can to it, because previous one fly's got my wife involved in fly fishing.
I look forward to this every year, and will be coming to this years event, but I wouldn't worry about having the sponsorships/ prizes as in the past.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.

I remember a similar thread to this one last year.

I recall the majority of prominent names here voicing their desire for a much smaller event, little more than a meet & greet, fishing, and food.

Between the thread being started and the event itself, it seems most of those voices went unheard, and the event was very big again, including many aspects that many of the contributors to the ideas thread had specifically said they'd rather avoid.

Now here we are this year, with another ideas thread, and the same opinions are coming in.  Based on the reports from last year, I can't help but wonder if the suggestions for a smaller, more personal event will be heard any more than last year.

A year ago, I had already made a commitment to be at an event in DC for that weekend, and couldn't make it.  I just got the email a few weeks ago that these two events will again conflict with one another, so it really doesn't make a difference to me...but when you've got an overwhelming majority of "regulars" interested in a small event, it may be something to seriously consider.

For what it's worth, I've attended the Clarion Outing in both 2012 and 2013, and it looks like I'll be missing the One Fly for both of these years as well.  It's not an either/or, obviously, just the way it worked out.  Even so, the Clarion outing fits the description of what many of these regulars are saying they want, almost to a tee (no contests, games, raffles, donations, corporate sponsors, etc...just fishing, friendship, and food), and it could very well be that this is the style that most of the One Fly crowd is looking for as well.

I did really enjoy the "night before" last year too.  Again, pretty simple.  Hangin out, food, beer, talking fishing and whatever else.

Just an update here for the ONE FLY this year:

No prizes this year unless a few of the participants want to muster up some on their own!

The thought of going back to the roots of the gathering is and was my thoughts from the get go but I am not one to make changes as soon as I take it over the first year!

Having this event for the awareness of free fishing, land awareness, personal bets/crap talking, idea/project sharing and good old fish stories is and always was the way I personally liked having it!

Jack always did a great Job putting this event on and there is no way we could do it any better than the way he organized this event!

Yes it started Small and Yes it grew Big!

I liked the smaller version of it, so, Yes we are going back to the roots of the event!

Friday Night October 25th: Poker game and some Grilling happening at Foley's End Pavillion!
(proceeds from Poker game go towards helping with land owners gifts) ($20 Buy in's)
Saturday Morning October 26th: Sign Ups 7-8 A.M.
    Fishing from 8AM to 2PM
    Back at Pavilion by 2PM

Games (yes quite a few people enjoyed them)
BYOB and bring a pot luck favorite dish for food!
Crap talking and idea sharing always a must!
We will have a few odds and ends that were there before and a must to have (bragging prize and a top dog prize to shoot for)!
As Far as a bunch of prizes No!
As Far as a bunch of stories Yes!

I hope you Enjoy the changes and Enjoy being a part of the Event as it was in the past!

I will start a sign up thread on here next week with all of the details but wanted to lay out the changes and get a feel for the ideas!

October 26th 2013 is the Date, Mark it on the Calendar!

Sounds good Rick.  I am 50/50 right now-my son is to be born around that time.  Gotta wait and see.
I'm glad u are gonna simplify.  One logistical question-if the fishing ends at 2pm, shouldn't there be at least a 30 minute cushion for people to get back to the pavillion? You have the return time set at 2pm also.  Just a suggestion.

Thats up to them on how long it takes to get to the pavilion from where they are fishing.
2PM is the cut off at the pavilion.
You can fish the creek at the pavilion till 1:59:45 and walk up within 15 seconds to turn your numbers in!
