Nea- Understand what your are talkin about- a nice run with low water and it looks like the Sioux charging Custer.
Difference is- this went on for weeks- not hours.

I might add, if this season is anything like last tie as many flies as you can then double or triple the amount.  Some mighty big fish are being taken out in the lake and if that is any indication of what is to come be forewarned.

Last season the boat guys got some really big Kings right up to the time they ran and some bout 40 were taken early in the run that I am aware of. Generally -speially early- they seemed somewhat larger than normal.
Saw some monsters laying in the LFZ on that low water when it was closed for extra time.
Dont weigh them and perhaps I got used to the size but nice fish were throughout the season and not as many Jacks noticed mid river  as I normally see upriver.
Yea- hope the Hos run and hope they run later than last season too. Just a normal year for them would be refreshing after last year. If I have their cycle figured correctly this may well be a decent season for them and the following may be better.

I would love to see a run of Coho's like last year's run of Kings.  The only problem is the Ho's don't lollygag their way upstream.  You get a few casts at them and they are on their way.

My memory is that in the early 80s we had some pretty massive coho runs and that they hung around longer on the low water every day than they do know with the higher flows that are the norm.
Trouble is they got freky spooked pretty quick  so if you weren't on them early it was just flogging the water until the higher water was about to hit when a mad bite would occur as they cued up to move.
Maybe a moderate low water year is just what is needed to get an extended chance at cohos.
Steelhead slid thru the lower river last year with most of the salmon rakers never seeing them a good run of coho could have done the same a month earlier with just a few incidentals getting roped and the bulk free for the fishermen.

While the week before was a day for kings, Sept-17-2011 was a day I will never forget when Charlie (fishy) and myself hit the mother of all coho runs..
Water was pretty dead until about 8:30 am when all hell broke loose
Estimation 4-6 thousand, by Rocky's guess.. My guess, most ho I ever seen..
Silly was the word and right place at the right time... Thanks for the forever memories :)

About four season ago I hit the waters on the lower end a couple of days after Labor Day and the fishing was slow.  By 10 AM most of the people had already left since nothing was happening.  I decided to hang out in the hopes that fish would finally start to move from the RT 3 bridge upriver.  It wasn't until mid day that I started to see activity headed my way as groups of five to six Coho's intermittently worked their way up river.  I was fishing the water between the Spring and Joss Hole.  These fish would pause long enough for two or three casts and be on their way.  Even the few Kings didn't wait long to blast by.  I had a pig of a steelie stop rods length away while I was changing flies.  The thing that I learned that day was the Coho's worked their way upriver hanging tight to the bank while the King's seemed to prefer mid river.  I can't say this is the norm but I found it interesting.

TB : I have had some surreal banner days fishing down low . It can go from an ok 2's &3's to all out black with fish at the flick of a switch.
Been in the boat / yak as well getting towed by toothy critters when salmon decided they wanted in .. Never had much luck with them there though in the still water. Trouts on the other hand is a different story :) floating sacs on the bottom work well you just gotta relax while the salmon bump your line and wait for the take .been a few years since but maybe the wife will enjoy yakin around there for a revisit..
Heck I'm hoping the in law want to take his driveway queen boat back out again. Humm

Now I'm back to basics with the salmon. Up and even Furthur up river to swing on spawners . After a few or not , all is right and trout become the focus for awhile.

It was insane last season because of how low the water was, you could see everything and you could walk any where. Which basically gave the kings no place to hide or get away from split shot being fired at them. I kinda felt like I was cheating at times where i'd make 2 casts and hook up after I figured out the correct set up and fly.

I'm hoping this season the water is up a little more than last year. Its almost takes the fun out of fishing when it was as easy as it was last year.

When its good take it as a gift from the Gods.  When its bad look to conquer another day.  I'll take last year's bonanza any time because I have taken the skunk on a number of occasions.

I found plenty of room.
Sometimes the number of fish matched the number of anglers.
0 TO 0
Other times I had plenty of fish and the closest person was 15 yards away and he was with me.
The nearest stranger a 100 or so away.
I do have to say that on 1 occassion when I was into thick pods of thick steelbows some salmon snagging jalorms stood in the riffs they were running shutting it down while they glassed for salmon.
That pretty much sucked but they were tstill 40-50 feet away from me.
