Catching Nightcrawlers

After our Wednesday evening bible study here at church I too my 6yr old and 4yr old boys out into the yard to catch some Nightcrawlers. We had alot of fun! we were only out there for 45 minutes to an hour but I'll bet we got over 200 worms! It was a blast watching the boys trying to grab them before they zipped back down their hole.  I ended up getting a hold of most of them and then letting the boys pull them the rest of the way out.
I remember going out to catch crawlers as a kid and it being almost as much fun as going fishing with them. I love being a Dad to three little boys, it lets me just keep on being a big kid! 
Hopefully I'll get some use out of these crawlers. I'm planning on fishing Pyme on monday, so maybe we can catch a few eyes on harnesses & bottom bouncers while fishing for crappie.

Used to do that with my grandpa. Good memories ...enjoy your time with them..

Doesn't have to be raining, but has to be damp. In the dry weather they go deep...
 

Haven't had too much opportunity to use them. My boy and I caught a couple of nice catfish at crooked creek with them last Monday.
I'll be going up to Pyme onThursdsyand am hoping to pick up some eyes on them then.
But they are doing great in the fridge so I'll have them to use all summer.

How is your season going so far Chuckles?

the trick that i used when i was a kid was to pour soapy water on the ground and wait for them to surface. was real fun back in the day.

  I've been doing fairly well on the Perch at Pyme. The Perch really like the Folgers coffee flavored crawlers. ( been mixing coffee grounds with the compost I keep them in)   I brought home 12 that were all 10" to 12" on Wednesday last week and 8 this past Thursday.  Along with 2 legal Walleye  17" & 19".   Lots of dink Perch a few slab Crappies but not many.
 Looks like "crawler pickin" won't be to good until we get some more warm rains. The first time I was out I picked up about 400 and the last time there were very few. I find I do better when it's above  55* and has rained most of the night.
  Take those young boys out fishing as often as you can. That's a Bible endorsed sport, because "The Master"  told  Peter to go fishing and we're to follow his example. LOL

seems most fish like the coffee flavor. They make soft plastics with the coffee scent and flavor in them

Not trying to hi-jack the thread but, I always wondered if the tobacco smell from the snuff cans that Poor Richards & others used to sell Maggots in, had any effect on the fish. Although I don't use bait often,sometimes it seems that when I do, If I have been chewing tobacco & got the scent on my hands that the bite slows. I know that when  I throw a piece or two in the water If a gill grabs it that they usualy spit it back out & then avoid it from then on.   sam
