Books n at

Ive been lookin for a good steelhead book or guide book... somethin with lots of colorful pictures to keep me dreaming during the summer.
Anyone ever read the John Nagy's steelhead journal?  it looks nice

Im also a bit confused about all this spring run / fall run fish and the difference.. some say its strain or that ohio stocks more spring run fish... i dont know. Ive heard and read some different things..

My bro says i caught the fever real bad this year...  I hope the summer goes quick (:

John Nagy seems to know what he's talking about. I met him on 20 Mile Creek when i was about 13 years old and just learning how to fly fish. I spent all day with him. He really taught me a lot. I cannot remember which book i read but it was pretty good and very helpful.

The way I understand it Ohio and NY stock a strain that spawns in the spring.
And Pa stocks a different strain that spawns in the fall.
Both strains can be found in tribs when waterlevels and water temps are right.
I catch mostly PA stocked fish in elk but my freind got a nice hen last week that was an Ohio fish for sure.
Couldn't tell you how to determine the difference just can tell after fishing all 3 states long enoiugh I am sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in....
There are a few good "books authored by "Douglas" about fishing the Salmon river in Ny has some good pics and graphs they are old school but would teach you a thing or two about the elusive steelhead an its habits.
Most lessons I  learned were from 2 good guides on Salmon River and just plain old time spent learning on the water.
If you enjoy it keep at it it can be a great "hobby or tradition" causing freinds and family to spend time together.

Someone on the Ohiogamefishing site was offering to sell the Nagy steelhead guide for $15 shipped a week or so ago.  I've the third edition or I would have bought it.  You could check to see if it's still for sale if interested.

"Steelhead Dreams" by Matt Supinski is probably what you are lookin' for.

changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes....nothing remains quite the same

Its under OGF marketplace and is titled steelhead-ohio river-duck id books and maps.  snag is the guys handle and it was last posted to 3-29-13.  The book Beerman offered is also a good one.

A couple other i have and liked are Great Lakes Steelhead Salmon and trout by Karl Weixlmann and Great Lakes Steelhead by Bob Linsenman.  I also have another Linsenman book titled Best Streams for Great Lakes steelhead but it cover streams from MIchigan to New York.

If you want to remember it during the off seasons, video it! I've done it on all kinds off trips. Pop the movie in and think about whats going to be happening. It's great listening to the wine of the engine on a snow covered path while it's 90 degrees out, just as it is when you can only catch pans and listen to your drag and someothers sing out the chouris of a slimer in July..... And you think, in those cases, only a few months...........
