What line for trout
What are some of the different types and brands of line you guys use for trout. I have to re-spool all my reels before the season starts and was wondering if anyone has any ideas. I usually use Berkley Trilene 4lb. monofilament. I have been thinking of switching to some brand of 4lb. fluorocarbon. I like that fluorocarbon is almost invisible under water, especially for spooky trout. What's your thoughts?

I use 6lb fireline with a 6lb fluorocarbon leader. I think its a great combination of strength and sensitivity. Plus with the leader its nearly invisible even in clear water.

4 or 6 lb test X50. Only available at Cabelas but its wicked strong! My tournmanent partner casted in a tree and pulled the whole boat loaded down with gear to the tree with 8lb. Casts super smooth.

Whatever 4 pound test is cheapest when I go to the store, never had a really bad day, I mean they are just stupid stocked trout

Catchin, I am really interested in using the X50. I have just heard that when you spool a small ultralight spool with fluorocarbon, it causes problems. I don't have any experience with fluorocarbon line. Just don't want any hassles when it is time to fish.

Im a big fan of stren orginal for trout (6lb in the moss green or clear depending the water colors you fish) but I promise you X50 doesn't cause many problems. I use 8 lb on spinning reels and 10-20 for my bait casters. Its good stuff, lil pricey, but worth it. It holds up great, doesnt have much memory at all, and is super strong from my experiences with it. Casts like a dream. Give it a world!

You could prolly just use some rope with a piece of cheese and throw it out and still catch trout. Line doesnt matter.

bcain, If you go with fluorocarbon line. Be sure to wipe it off before you quit for the day. Small bits of dirt and whatnot stick to fluoro and can cause the line to shred. If you keep up on it, it's ok.

P-line CX Premium. Its a flouro coated copolymer. You'll thank me later :) Casts like a dream, super low memory, invisible under water, and hella strong! Its really amazing stuff and costs about $9-$10 for 300yds. I prefer the clear florescent color and buy it in 1000yd spools @ $17. I use it on about 80% of my spinning rods.

Always thought trout were line spooky until one day this old guy stands across the river from me and casts out a line with a chunk of crawdad and bam pulls out about a seven or eight pound german brown. I'm busy catching 12" dinks with my ultra light 6lb setup. The guy was using about 10lb bright chartreuse fishing line so he could see the hit. I have never worried about it since. If I think they are spooky I might put a fluorocarbon leader on.

No need to spool up your whole reel with flouro. For stockers in PA I'd fill my reel with Berkley XL 4lb and then attach a few feet of 2lb test fluoro to the line with a bloodknot for the leader. I'd guess that less than 1 percent of the trout stocked in PA are larger than 2lbs, and besides, with the proper drag and play you can land a monster on that set up. The old world record brown (40.4 lbs) was caught on 4 lb test line. Freshly stocked fish aren't necessary line shy, but they'll learn to look out for it if they're caught and released a time or two. Not to mention that line with a smaller diameter causes less drag and makes for a more natural presentation. In the past I used to experiment in heavily fished DHALO's by changing the material (mono or fluoro) and strength/diameter (6/4/2 lb) of my leader without changing the lure. Caught many more fish with the smaller line and the fluoro; usually markedly so.

Jefff, I was just looking at the P-Line Cx copolymer. I was wondering if it truly is as invisible under water as fluorocarbon. It said in the book better casting too but I know all companies say theirs is the best. I think I might go with that. Gonna go tomorrow and start getting some of the supplies I need.

I use 6# triline on my UL setup has yet to fail me yet... I even use it for Steelhead... If I was to spend the money on a good Fluorocarbon I'd go with 4/5/7# Sunline Sniper. I wouldn't full spool my reel with it either. I really wouldn't say you're going to have to fight with a 15# fish but anything can happen. So if you buy a 200yrd spool of Fluoro i'd try to spool about 100yrds on to the reel if you can even put that much on it depending the depth of the spool. 300ft of fishing line is a TON and even fishing for steelhead I think 100yrds is a tad bit overkill unless you get a trophy on. Plus the best part of Fluoro is that you don't have to replace it every year due to memory etc (unless you buy junk.)
