I think they will do a killing during the winter, catching the Dad's while the family heads to Splash Lagoon and the locals looking to fight off cabin fever. Also family members of outdoorsmen, will likely be getting more Cabela's gift cards for birthdays & Christmas. Will also grab folks passing through I90. I doubt they will do much for direct competition to PR, BAC ect. for those fishing that day, but I wouldn't doubt that those smaller stores see a reduction in rod, reels and lure sales overall. Like others have said, I can't see how this won't hurt the local stores overall.

think there will be a slight impact but, Cabela's is kinda like the Wal-mart of outdoor stores you can 1 stop and go if you need say waders, gloves, line, and rod. BAC, PR, Trout Run shops probably won't take a huge hit due to 3 reasons. A.) They are right at the Lake B.) They provide the BEST selection for what is being fished for... Yes, Cabela's may have all the hooks, spinners, spoons, and lures the little shops have possibly a hair cheaper possibly not. C.) The major thing Cabela's won't have is the knowledgeable individuals that PR, BAC and other Erie shops have on hand to give insight into the watershed and conditions. They also I doubt would have the wide array of live bait and eggs that the local guys have...

of course it will effect many local stores . Most effected will the be the ones NOT "right on the water" location and convenience are their insulating factors it will take a bite out of WalMart's sporting goods dept. If there's a Gander in the area, they have the most to lose though ..and they will too . most certainly in the short term . long term will be contingent on pricing..but even if pricing is comparable, there's only so many local bucks to go around. Cabelas WILL take some of that and nearly ALL the tourist traffic (no one goes to Gander just to "check it out") I think it unlikely it will add any pressure to the creeks . It'll be the other way around..the steelheaders and boaters/anglers will be adding to cabelas traffic. It's almost a sure a thing I'll stop there to look around when I'm done fishing ..L.T.A.

I have been a Customer of Cabelas and Gander mountain since they both opened many many Years ago. I have been to many of their stores.I used to order alot of stuff from them but recently a few years ago found FishUSA.I do 90% of my business with them and now my Son inlaw and my other Friends buy from them also. Better prices, great selections and fast and cheaper shipping.I like to buy locally from the small guys as usually they have a better selection for the fishing in their area. My local GM store in Tonawanda should close up to as they never have a selection of anything.Never have a good selection of sinkers, swivels, spinner selections.BassPro was supposed to put a store in Buffalo and never materialized, so maybe Cabelas will not either in Erie.

Bogeyjoker freshwaterdrumR Can't seem to remember the last time I went to cabelas and wasnt disappointed in the prices/selection. Hopefully this doesnt hurt the local businesses too much.... +1 If it's not on sale you're paying too much. The bargain cave has almost the only things I look at.

They are not coming to Erie. Not sure if I missed it here or not but they said Baldwin brothers and Cabelas could not agree on a price.

A Cabelas in Erie would be an hour farther away than the one I don't go to now.

when I get a catalog I'll flip through it and generally toss it in the woodstove. You won't hear me complaining about free BTU's.
burning glossy/colored paper is not good for your fire place. Can buildup and start a chimney fire.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

That's nice, but NIMBY. Elk Creek at Sterretania is just down the hill. Not sure that I want it that close.

NIMBY: Not In My BackYard I don't think Cabelas is too concerned about the stream, but the people that fish it sure are. And who knows, I could see Cabelas buying up a few hundred yards of streamfront, ostensibly for aesthetics, or maybe even for steelhead "workshops"...possibly even to give people a place to test out rods, reels, etc....but also to keep the knuckle-dragging mouth breathers away from their clientele (even though these same mouth-breathers, on another day might BE their clientele). Better yet, stick a "Cabelas Customers Only" sign in the dirt (maybe even with a "Lemonade Stand"-style kiosk on the water), and now you get people walking up to buy a spool of tippet or some salmon eggs just to be able to pass/fish through.

If you look at the ORVIS store in Valant, they are right on the creek. They use their location to everyone's advantage. They have raffles to collect money to stock extra fish in front of the store. They provide parking and access to the creek at the same time insuring they have a steady steam of potential clients coming through the area. Works out well for everyone.

bowhuntnsteve guess true about elk being around sterrettania but no different than the millcreek mall having walnut creek encompass it I think I see your point, but one difference is that since the mall was put there has been much less water in Walnut Creek, actually with the way the whole watershed has been blacktopped and all. If Cabelas moves in it would probably become an anchor store for other stores in that area again taking away from the rain water absorption needed for good creek levels. Of course the Green Shingle is already blacktopped, but I doubt it would end there. Did anyone ever eat at Dixies?
