algie bloom on lake erie

i saw on the news last nite that lake erie is on the verge of a huge algie bloom. they showed and over head 3D shot of the algie from a couple months ago and then now. the algie growth has exploded and is getting worse fast. an algie bloom of that size could devistate the lake. its all gonna depend on the up coming rain falls to determan how bad it is going to be.

Those pics were from 2011. Last year with the drought, I don't think the bloom was really bad at all. If we have a wet spring ( Ohio, actually), then the bloom can be bad again this summer. Too much runoff from the farm fields along the maumee river.

Is that the same problem that is depleting the oxygen levels in the water? Does rain help, or hinder this problem?

Nutrient loading is the problem (N-P-K for those of you who know soils). Rain isn't so much the problem, it largely due to bad soil management practices and stormwater run-off.

the rain is bad for the algie blooms. the rain mixes the layers of algie with the water and takes the oxygen. the map of the lake they showed on the news was from this year it said. there was an algie bloom in a lake close to my house a few years ago and it **** near killed everything in the lake.
