March Steelhead
Any different than late fall and winter? Any other fish swimming in the creeks at the time too? My buddy and I are planning to go up over his Spring break, just wanted to know what kind of fish we could run into.

In March ? Most likely the only fish youll see in the cricks are steelhead. To early for bass and I doubt you'll see any suckers yet.

Alright, well thanks for the info, I guess another question would be, do you fish for them the same way? Same flies and everything?

Same way. try and get in there before they stock the smolts. If the smolts are there, use bigger bait. My favorite is a 6th ounce white rooster tail. It catches the stockies and the stekheds and is a lil too big for the smolts. BH

Ok since I will be fly fishing, maybe some white wooly buggers will get the job done. It doesn't say when they stock the smolts, so hopefully they don't stock them early march

william h I would like to see a no fishing period after the smolts are stocked. This would only be for a few weeks until the regular trout season. Smolt mortality rates are high and fisherman do there fair share by just hooking them accidently. I have no idea why regular stockers are even put in elk, just ridiculous if you ask me. Bill h Because they have been stocking elk with regular stockers looooong before stekheds were ever introduced to these waters. BH
