In the channel is the only place that usually isnt froze when everything else is. Mad currents usually keep it ice free, most of the time. Not to say it has never froze over cause it does but its never safe to walk on near the channel because of the current running in and out of the bay.

While for the purpose of most dicussion here, the "channel" IS basically the area between the N&S piers ( between the lake & bay ). The channel actually extends well into both the bay & the lake.

I've seen people fishing off the south pier but have no idea of how to get to it by foot. Will someone give me some quick directions on how to get there and where you park. No plans of fishing it anytime soon, just want the information.

If you are leaving the bait shop at the landing, turn left onto the Bayfront.  Go to the next light and turn left, I can't remember if there is a sign at the entrance, but follow the road all the way to the back, and the lot is on your right.  Lug/cart your gear as far down the pier as you wish.

A lot of times if you just check all the places along the city side of the bay from the south pier to the condos , you can tell where the fish are being caught by the small group of cars parked in the same area. and the anglers bunched up off any of the piers. Sometimes all it takes is 30 minutes to find a location. There are a lot of local ole' timers that are there everyday. I had 3 uncles who checked every place everyday till they found em. Work = Reward , Plus you may find a place you never knew existed before.

if your coming off of state, its the 2nd light you make a left.  the first light is Holland St.  you want to go down Port Access Rd.  There is a sign on the bayfront for Lampe and the south pier
