Really tees me off when its obviously foul hooked and they say they have to get their fly back.

 Its a rar day to fish LFZ at any time of yewar without somebody who thinks the whole place is theris alone.

Another great report, Clint. Well told. More idiots, and NO IT'S  NOT RIGHT TO LEAVE A FISH SIT STILL FOR 15 MIN.   I don't know if I can take  watching  the maroons sit on the corner and yank fish because they're piled there and think they're EXPERTS. Oh well, it's the LFZ. Grin and bear it. Absotively glad you hooked up.

We were all new once :) Thats how I usually look at it.
On a funny note:
Some of us have a term of endearment for anglers who just stand there with a fish on below them for a long time, in a good spot with other anglers being polite and giving that angler room, unable to fish as there line is in front of them.
We jokingly call them "a poser". Like they are posing for a picture, instead of following there fish and trying to stay even with it.
Or, like you said, put the wood to it.
Getting it in fast'r and not tieing up the fishing for everyone else.
I always suggest to my guest's to stay even or below there fish. (Tires fast'r) Listen to the fish and it will tell you what to do.
If all the anglers in a specific spot can not follow there fish due to deep water, then we all simply take a lil break. Everyone works together.
Once in a blue moon Ill suggest "politely" getting even with it. Better for the fish, better for the angler, for many reasons. Plus, everyone can fish.
I always get a thank you in return.
Realistically, I find that if you dont know this and have never had it explained to you, then you simply dont know.
Sounds like the guy could - should have given her the above tips, then everyone would have been happier, especially the fish.
We were all new once. :) and I probably was a poser then too. Didnt know any better until it was explained to me. :)

On a positive note, maybe everyone's post on here will help educate others who are new to this amazing fishery!

Lactic acid build-up will occur even when the fish is resting on the line.  Letting a fish hang inthe current for a long period of time will do more damage than playing it fast and hard, tiring it out, bringing it to hand for the seemingly mandatory cell phone snap, and then revival and release.  But Randy is correct, with all the national exposure, there are a lot of new fishers and to someone who has a good year if they get a couple 16" fish on inland waters, even a little 22"  looks like a monster.  Hopefully, more newbies will talk to tackle shop folks or do a little pre-reading and pick up some of this, but even Morgan Lyle has a lot of misconceptions working in his article in the Dec 28 New York Outdoor News.  Just to pick up on one, I swing flies and fish upstream nymph style, sometimes in the same drift, only use my Spey rod when the run is monster, like the Snag, so often swing with a one hander, and have never seen the styles as mutually exclusive.
