Fishing this weekend
My cousin asked me to go fishing somewhere this weekend. I was thinking of several places. I like Greenlick/Bridgeport, Donegal, and Virgin Run. Has anyone been out to those places? Doing any good? I also like Acme. Any suggestions? I am really only interested in those places since they are close to me. Another question. I fished Kooser the first day of trout because only because my brother took my niece and I wanted someplace that was easy access. Does anyone fish there? I really like it there although the opening day was a little more crowded than I like. What species are in there? We did well with the trout. I have heard there are different species then I heard there is only trout. Any info would be of great help.

Bcain- all I've ever caught from Kooser is trout, largemouth bass, and bluegil, although I'm sure there are some other species around. What type of fish do you wish to target? Donegal is under a drawdown for weed control so I wouldn't go there. I've fished greenlick a few times and have done well on all panfish, gills crappie and perch. Never caught an eye from there though.

I caught a small musky at Kooser once, but that was probably 10-12 years ago.

I've only caught trout at Kooser. There are some panfish and largemouths there. There may be something else in there but I am not sure. But don't waste your time going after anything else except for trout. It known as a real good trout lake but not for anything else.

I fished Kooser many years ago. I went there this year for opening day because my niece needed some place with easier access. I really liked it other than the crowd. I imagine there wouldn't be much of a crowd now. I noticed on the back side near the spillway it is pretty thick with weeds. I asked what species was in there because I figured I would have seen some gills or bass trolling the weeds but I seen NOTHING. Caught all mine over on the front side. I think I am gonna go there if everything works out although it's looking like Christmas shopping is gonna get in the way of fishing this weekend. Thanks for the reminder on Donegal. I remember someone on here saying Donegal is under a drawdown. If I get out, I think I'll try Kooser then if no good, I'll stop at Acme. As for what I target. At Kooser I target trout. Was just wondering if there is anything else. I like to fish either a butterworm or mealy under a float then while I'm waiting, I'll throw a Roostertail.

Donegal,Mamoth,Keystone State Park lake,& Lower Twin lakes are all being drawn down, not emptied, for weed control. As such they are opened for fishing now. There were even canoes & belly boats out last week at Donegal & they were catching Trout. There may be a problem now with ice,We were still catching Trout & Crappie at Twin Lakes earlier this week. Don't forget to get your new license. sam

Don't forget to get your new license. Excellent reminder. Also, it's worth noting that you can get a 2013 license now, and use it through December. While that makes no difference to 99.99% of this board, who already has their 2012 license, it might be useful knowledge for anyone trying to convince a friend, girlfriend, wife, teenage kid, etc. to get their license now instead of waiting for the trout opener.

It's looking like it won't be this weekend. I am glad you mentioned the license. I would have went out next week and totally forgot about getting a new one.

It's been 5 years since I've fished there, but every year for 8 years I used to catch these little hammer handle predatory fish, can't remember if they were pike or muskie. They were all carbon copies of each other, all between 8-9". Does anybody know which species they were? I'd always see them cruising the shoreline about 15' out and they were located after one crossed the dam breast and when walking towards the head of the man-made island. Sometimes I'd see them in the overflow section, but not often.

Maybe pickerel. I know pickerel are the smallest of the that family of fish.

From what I could find on the internet, it sounds like they were American Pickerel. Said they grow to a 16" max.

We used to catch some nice Northerns out of Kooser, I imagine that they spawn there also,if so, when they are growing you would catch those (Hammer Handles). We would also catch them out of Donegal, but it has been quite a few years since I have heard of any Northerns come from there. Musky, yes Also a few years back we would catch a few Pickerel from Shawnee Lake, then mostly Northerns, don't know if they compete with each other or not. Those little Hammer Handles are fun. They look just like thier parents & are just as aggresive, They will hit Rapalas almost as long as themselves. I understand that is why they are so hard to raise in a hatchery although I have heard that the Biologists have developed a dry food that works on predators now. sam

I just got back into fishing so sorry if I ask a lot of questions. Is it worth it going up to Kooser in the winter? The reason I ask is it seems like every time I go there, a lot of guys keep their limit out of there. Didn't know if it gets pretty much fished out. I used to only fish streams up around Somerset and Berlin and I know some of the smaller streams would get pretty fished out.
