12/15/12
Buddy calls me up a 0630 am and says lets go and he did not have to ask me twice left by 700. Stopped at all seasons and they were out of 5lb drennen so I bought maxima.......... Went to the Papermill hole and fished and explored for 2 hours or so 2 other people there , but no hook ups. There were 3 dead ones I saw. My buddy has not landed one yet so I thought the LFZ would be his best bet as we had to be back home by 100. It was pretty sparce on the church side so we decided to give it a try. Fished for an hour and only saw 1 hook up. Just as I was getting ready to move and try to squeeze in front of the hemlocks the good rock opened up and I jumped on it, managed 1 quick hook up and played it for a while and the hook popped. A bit later hooked up again and had a nice female at the net but the friggen Maxima broke at the knot and my buddy got a nice 1/8 ounce bruise on his chest. I kept on offering the spot to my buddy and he finally took it , but had no luck. He literally reeled his pole up as it was 5 minutes before we had to leave and I jumped in for a few more casts. Second cast fish on and landed it (I switched out to my 6 lb drennen). was a good was to end the day. I think I got a pic,but hte battery went dead and I will check after I was the cars. All 3 hits were on eggs 2 on my take of a Babine egg and one on a blue egg. I was very close to the bottom. We were at the LFZ for 2.5 hours and saw 3 fish netted including mine and around 10 fish on including my 3. Next time out Tuesday or Thursday. Tuesday my dog has a dental cleaning and a few skin tags taken off. He does not handle the vet well so I stay until he is put out and have to come back when he starts to wake up, my vet is in Pulaski so may be fishing there. Clint

Sounds like what I saw this week too Clint- Not much happenin elsewhere and what fish there are -stacked in the Zone. Gettin like the bad old days where one fish on a 3 day trip in the River was kinda normal. Too bad- the cycle will eventually come back around- only hope I can still fish when it does. Certainly hope they stock plenty cause any natural spawn this year will likely be lousy. Where the heck did all those fish go from the great Lake reports this year ???

As you can see the guy behind me is hooked up too. I think the bite was turning on , but we had to go literally got it 5 minutes before we left. Forgot to mention there was a fellow across from me fishing with a fly reel lined with mono C and Ding with 2 big split shots at least a 1/4 ounce if they were tin, more if they were lead. I can look past a little extra weight as I will admit I have sneaked an extra BB on or fished with an 1/8th split and a weighted fly. So looking past the weight, what would you do in this situation. I will post what I did later.

Clint, you are a fishing machine! Glad you put one on the bank. I got to fish last friday and got blanked on the plugs again. Quite a difference from last year, was averaging at least 6 landed per trip with 10 on, this year have been skunked many times with the best days being 4 to the net. Last year the last 3 weeks in december saw many in the 14lb range with 3 I can remember being a good couple pounds heavier that did not get landed, water has been up for a week and couldnt find a partner to float with probably gonna drop after tomorrow, no snow to ride the sled, no ice to fish, didnt get a deer, soon low water again this year isint ending very well!

John I was busy Friday or I would have went. I can't (don't know how to) row, but I take directions real good. Just saw that the water is going down tomorrow at 900. I will have to get out Tuesday if possible. I have Thurs and Fri off, but Thursday is probably a lock more due to the weather looking good. I may or may not need to do Christmas stuff on Friday. Yes, I wait till the last minutes for shopping. Thursday I will again walk some new water (probably Ellis) for a bit and then go into town Charlie I have no secret techniques other than putting my time in and parking my **** in the right spot if it opens up and today it did. The rock we saw action at has consistently produced every time I went the last few times (usually just not by me), today it opened up and I jumped. Really has only been 3 consistent places that have had consistent action since the water went up and you know them all. I know I spend alot of time in the zone, but as long as I catch fish I'm good. I am slowly trying to expand my comfort zone.

Clint, I thought you were referring to technique to get a fly down in your earlier post. My tricks ain't workin' too good lately. I think what you meant was what to do about someone breaking the law. My bad. I have zero problems with how you fish and where- I do pretty much the same. If that's the case: I would've told the guy it was illegal to use his method there and he should go down below the bridge. The tip line is about useless at this time of year, so I wouldn't bother. I've told 2 people that were using mono or shooting line in the fly zones the same thing. In both cases they truly didn't know it was illegal (ignorance is not an excuse, but we all make mistakes) , and they moved on with a thank you.

Yea, Charlie that's what I was getting at. Specifically the use of the mono in the Zone. I politely told him that he shouldn't be using mono in the Zone as it is illegal . He rather politely (no sarcasm) told me that this was all he had and he wanted to fish with his buddies and he was going to take his chances and stay. I did nothing after that. He was not snagging or lifting by any means. As far as running fly line (not mono), I had a discussion with a DEC officer and he said if he caught you lifting in the zone he would surely write a ticket for snagging and the line , but he would not single a guy out and write a ticket for just that as long as has fishing the right way. He alluded to the same if someone had an 1/8 split and a bead head fly. He also added if he asks for a license and gets a hard time he would write a ticket for both even if you were fishing the right way.
