Beware in treestands

Had a buddy yesterday, while climbing with his stand, had the top of the climber break lose. His feet were in the straps and he fell backwards but his feet stayed in the straps. It took 90 minutes for help to arrive as his buddy heard him yell and climbed the tree also but couldnot right his friend. He hung upside-down, 18 feet off the ground, trapped by his feet until the police and firemen arrived with a ladder. Amazingly, he didnt break his ankles or legs. He said the pain in his legs, while hanging ,was so bad he would have cut off his own legs if he could have. Always be carefull while climbing and coming back down....WF

That is scary, can't imagine hanging upside down for 90 min. ... I pray everything is ok .

Got into my stand one day at 0 dark 30 and later heard shouting and yelling from over at  my buddies stand. Thought he musta killed Brutus.
Walked over to find him hanging there by his safety strap ( he was upright). The stand had slipped off the tree and he was saved by the strap.
I had used them sparingly till then- after that--Religiously.

When I was younger I used to be a lineman and was very comfortable with trusting my rig. We would let out our strap and would be able to stand horizontal on the poles for some long reaches out on the wires ( had great abs then) . When I started using a safety harness in my climber I first used it on a telephone pole and slowly released it to where I could lean way out for hard obstructed shots. It helped me to see the limits and built my confidence in the gear. Now I don't go up without it . (PS) carry a sharp knife in a place you can access if you find yourself hanging might need to cut yourself free.

Hey 09- My youngest kid is  Lineman.
If my Bud had his knife - or the inclination- he coulda spun around and cut the line too- the tree was thin enough and he was low enough for a kinda abbreviated shinny down- mighta been humerous to watch . lol
After the stand slipping though I can understand his not wanting to move and resorting to wails and screams.
The landowner and I got a ladder outa the barn and had to stop on the way to the tree as we were laughing so much- --first time I ever admitted to that.
First day of Rifle here in Ct-got out at 11 am and done at 11:10- Doe and Skippy stepped out -took Skippy-by choice. Only got bout 6 tags left but one more is plenty- will hold out for some horns till the end of Muzzel-2 is plenty.

The day after I lost the bottom while climbing down, I sold that tree stand.

When I first started using a tree stand I practiced on a tele pole at the back of the yard. It was a great expeience when about 15 feet off the ground my feet slipped out of the bottom part and fell leaving me hanging on to the top. Fortunately my son was nearby and helped me. After that happened I lashed the two together with a short piece of rope so I could not fall down and it also taught me to be more careful.

My 1st stand was old and you put ur feet in the bungee straps and hugged the tree to climb. While i was climbing my feet came out and the stand fell to the ground leaving me holding on with my arms. Was not fun when i was 12.

ALWAYS connected the top and bottom with a line so if the bottom goes it cant go far.   Also secure  the top  to the tree when up there.
Just a light line is enough to prevent a slip. Drill a hole in the back of  the top and run the lines and leave them for quick easy use when up a tree.
As age started limiting things-- reverted to ladder stands.
Whenever seeing  a seat way up a tree and those screw in little steps  get VERY jealous. lol
My first stands were made from lumber carried out into the woods or saplings ya cut on scene-hadda find 2 or 3 trees close together to make them -Modern technology has changed things for the better.

Climbers are dangerous--but I dont always have time to hang multiple stands so I use them.  I never feel completely safe in a climber.  I always have a safety strap attached to the top part.  I lost the bottom once because I tried to adjust it while in the tree.  Please take my word for it and NEVER DO THAT--no matter how poorly you miscalculated the angle--climb back down to re-adjust. I predict that I'll reach a point where I stop using them, but not yet.
