900 cfs !!!!!

yah i'm up in the air about this tues.
    the possible storm damage .
    leaving the mrs alone.
would that make me a cad.
the wind ripping the flyline off the water.
on the other hand where i have been fishing is great on that kind of water and the fish have everything going for them in the fight.
even the 8# rod and 12# test have little effect if they decide they want to get in the flo and go.
put me down as undecided in the poll.

Hey jack, i wonder if brookfield read my post from yesterday and decided to bump the water up :) lol...

Its about time they stepped up their game...

John, Something tells me that you are going to be in a pluggers Paradise this weekend!!! Steelhead are loaded up everywhere and with this ride in water they are probably going to be on fire... And at the same time most folks have trouble with 900 CFS ... Wish I could be there with you man go get'em!!!

900 cuts down on available water for wading . I'm still planning on going Sun., maybe Monday if they don't increase it.  If it goes up more than a few hundred of run-off on top of the 900 , just not worth the drive  for me.

986 at Pineville on the USGS site, and the slope of the rise says Man made.  They are regaining the storage they lost last week with the rains then.  I'll be rethinking my plans for tomorrow based on those flows.  I know I can fish a lot of places, but not the ones I really want to see, and its a long expensive drive.

Must be making room in the lower reservoir for  expectations of local runoff -that upper  is so low it may take 2 or 3 storms to have an impact.

I really do not like more than 1k and even then would prefer 750.  Just don't  have the tecnique or the knowledge for the higher water.  Might try tomorrow if it is not windy, maybe up north.

Trev, it took a few days but that last rain storm around the last time i saw you brought the level up quite a bit in the upper reservoir... it was mostly runoff from the northeastern headwaters... it took a few days to get there but thats why they have been running 335 up until yesterday...

Thanks Dime- good to hear-the res was wayyyy tooooo low. On the flip side I hate fishing anything much over 750.
Will be a coupla more weeks before conditions here allow me to get back up though-figure the immediate affects of this heavy weather next week will be gone by then.

I'm going to have to pull the plug on a sun-mon trip. Not due to the 900 but my ill preparedness at home for any severe weather .
I'm nowhere near ready for winter or any major weather events that may come.

Charlie I feel bad and wish you a great day if you guys make the trip.

In all honesty im hoping we get a good azz wiping water wise... seems as if brookfield is doing preliminary actions to prevent catastrophic flooding... bring on the 2000+... clean off the banks and the zoo petting snaggers... hopefully we're in store for a 750-1500 fall average flow with a nice stable 500 by december... then it will be prime steelhead time in this dumb anglers eyes ;)

    Dime-
You could be seeing a much more major blowout if we get the rain predicted. I heard 6" by this time next week.  As someone who likes more fight due to warmer water, with less of it so the flyrod is manageable with next to no weight, this one could end the season for me.  I'm with Retired, 750 and up gets a little squirelly.

Absolutely lucky, as why i put the "+" sign in there... as of now the forecasts are showing about 1/2 inch per day through next week... so far its showing south and west may get pounded... of course it can all change...and even if we dont get too much, a 2000 release will result in much more with run off. I guess time will tell at this point :) im just really happy to see brookfield stepping up their game... no one wants to see a repeat of 2010

On a side note; our 900+ actual flow at the moment is pretty much the average flow for this time of year... i really dont look at it as a bad thing... the steelhead in the river have taken a beating the past month... its about time they get the cover they deserve.

I HATE using big weights and high water makes it necessary more often than not. Generally skip the fly rod and have to spin my way through a trip in that big water. Not my cupa tea anymore. Like the noodle with 10 lb and sacs for steel now and again but frankly got into rolling sacs with the Switch last year and cant stop. That wont cut the mustard for me at my skill levels over 750.
Dont really like more than a couple of BB size wts on  my line- at most. Yea -it may cost me some fish but  I aint there to break any catch records,

I have no problem using what conditions dictate. I'll spin , I'll c&d or fish the inside seams , If that's what my time on the water dictates. I go to try and fool a fish. All of which catch fish.
I'll use any of the things I spend my earned money that will help that happen. It's not numbers game and it only takes one sweet tug but that's why I fish.

Got this crazy mental thing where I get almost as much pleasure out of working a fly line and putting it just where  intended over and over almost as much as catching fishes. Yea a fish is always the true target but I LOVE the process just as much. Nuts
Stood in the Bovines last Fall working a run with a log sticking into it for about 2 hours just working around the log. NO fishes but a great day.  Nuts
Never shot Bambi the year before last- Just sat there and passed and watched - a few times too--. Nuts
Sometimes  good memories dont have to involve Blood- but then there are those days where the Predator comes alive an he gotta be fed. Nuts
Somethin about knowing there are way more trips afield behind than there are ahead- makes ya kinda sit back and enjoy the whole picture -even the frame- a bit more.  Nuts

If I go tomorrow I will take the fly, but probably use the spin.  I am with HT, for me it is not the how,  it's the what.  That is, what ends up on the line, in the net or on the bank.  Spin or fly, sacs, beads or flies  the thrill of setting the hook and feeling that head start shaking is what keeps me going back.  I may not catch as many as most, but I have a hell of a good time trying to.

That's cool and sometimes the experience is priceless . Other times the price comes at a cost.
Honestly I have beautiful water behind my house and cast my fly till the moon comes out, No steelhead though. A few dumb stripers caught on live herring.
