crazy browns

These Brownies at Twin Lakes are driving me nuts. I have never seen such behavior for as long as this year. They are in spawning mode, dark & dripping, must be why they are jumping so much. I am getting them on almost everything I throw, but am missing 4 or 5 to every one I hook. And a lot of the ones that are hooked are being hooked in the nose or face. Also they are hitting my bobber quite often,so I tried a small floating Rapala, not so good. Guys are catching them on dry flies also. The trout are cruising just under the surface around both lakes & are mostly close to shore.  sam

Got a few at the lower lake this afternoon. 1 on a minnow, 2 on dry flies, the only two rainbows hit Joe flies. Nothing on still bait(again)

Finaly got a little payback on Sat. afternoon, after throwing my usuals for a while with little success,I found a pack of super top secret bait in the pile of Stuff I usualy carry.Been carrying these white powerbait nymphs around unopened since 2 ice seasons ago.Usualy I don't give numbers since that is not how I determine success, but this was unusual,at least for me. As soon as I started to throw this rig,I got 12 Browns on the first 12 casts, then I got my first rainbow of the month. Then,I guess the school moved & it slowed down & I started to pick up  a bunch more by moving around.Finaly as I worked my way to the parking lot I ran into a school of Crappie. While there were no slabs they were very welcome along with some gills & small bass that I caught also. Now the most amazing thing about this is that I was still using the same nymph that I started with. approx. 30 fish on one plastic, was very unusual for me.  sam

Good Job Sam. Were they the Gulp ones or just powerbait?

I always did well with the chartruese/greenish powerbait nymphs on crappie in the spring.  Might have to start trying some white ones now....

Slabdaddy, Reg. Powerbait with a bobber & a black Trout-Magnet jighead about12" down on a slow retrieve. I think that the fish thought it was a minnow.  sam

Sounds good. I caught monster browns in NY this year on 1" Gulp Minnows. Seems like those things catch everything. I'll check out the PB nymphs. Sounds like something I'd use for slabs.

I have had good luck with live minnows.  They appear to be defensive strikes, so an immediate hook set is necessary.  To be honest, if you don't keep the line taught and quick hook set they beat the thing up so fast it only lasts one cast.

Yep, these browns definitely want something moving. Wonder how long its gonna take some of the power bait/salmon egg/ velveeta cheese throwing duuds to figure it out. Still seeing quite a few of them getting skunked.

Tim and I did some serious damage on jigs without a float, the fish seemed to hate the float bigtime.  a jig pulled immediately as it hits the water got bit, and bit often.

Loomis,Cracked me up when they were actualy hitting the bobber trying to eat it. I wanted to bet my buds that I could have caught a ton just by using my cane pole & just teaseing them with anything when they swam by.Unfortunately I don't consider that sporting & wouldn't do it.At least now they are moving away from the shore a little, but still are close to the top. I was having fun with the smallest Flatfish that is made, but was a pain in the butt to cast.  sam

Yeah there were groups of browns when we were there they would just pod up and move around from place to place.  Didn't see too many swimming by but it is pretty weedy in close where we were fishing.  tellin you man, try the jig w/ out a float.

I may try this afternoon, but how can you cast it? What size jig are you using? I am using a 1/64 & that plastic actualy slows it down for me ,at least the way that I have to cast with this bum shoulder. Really I am more intrested in catching the tagged Rainbows, but can't seem to find them YET.   sam

Anybody catch any big ones yet? All that I've caught have all been decent, but I haven't caught or seen any over about 14". Nicest one so far was a real chunky rainbow from twin. Did the sportsmans assoc stock twin this fall? Or did pfbc put the bows in? I'm certainly not trying to complain about fish size, they're all nice. Nicer than last fall for sure.

The fishing Assoc. stocked about 250 rainbows in each lake, most of them were nice chunky fish. They put about a doz. tags in each lake but  according to the clubs treasurer whom I talked to to-day there were only 2 tags from each lake reported. From what I heard from the guys that were there when they stocked, the PFC put approx. 1500 browns in the upper lake & 1800 browns in the lower lake. I have been catching a good number of fish, almsot all browns & they look spawned out & skinny. Also been getting a few largemouths on spoons. Buddy of mine caught & relaesed some nice fat browns at the lower lake, maybe they weren't spawned out when he caught them. I got a fair ammount again this afternoon, the trout were all browns & even had 1 try to eat my bobber again. I got a few every stop I made . I think that the Browns being more aggresive are keeping the Bows away from shore. Didn't get any Crappie to-day but with the weather the way it was,I didn't expect to.Btw was only 1 or 2 others fishing for some reason. sam

We didn't find any rainbows ourselves but we got a few browns along the shore and some out in the middle on jigs, and had a few hit dry flies too.  Fish are definitely spread out now and not as much on the shoreline.  No idea where the rainbows are at all.  Got a few nice sized crappie but didn't get on them consistently, there was one older fellow along the rocks on upper lake that was doing pretty good w/ live minnows for crappie/trout, I'd imagine he had a basket of about 10 or so by mid afternoon.  Ice can't come soon enough.

Sam did you do any better after we left?  We took off at about 4 PM yesterday.

Adam, We got a couple at the place that I told you,but we stayed almost til dark & I went through several more sure fire lures with little luck.  lol That is why I seldom hesitate when asked what I am catching them on. Hot to-day-Not tommorow. Still no bows.

I often have browns hit my float / strike indicator this time of the year. Once when fishing the Loyalhanna in early fall, a monster brown smashed my orange indicator instead of my fly. That night I went home and tied an orange deer hair popper. The next day at daybreak I went back and caught the fish with the popper on the first cast. It was one of the biggest fish I ever caught in my life, stretching well beyond my 24 inch rule. Back then I didn't carry a camera and I didn't want to kill it. The only witness was my pops, and he likes to deny it just to **** me off.

You can fish a popper as your indicator, with your jig or fly as a dropper. It actually works pretty well.

Fishink, I trid to post this before, but for some reason it didn't work. I tried an old trick that I used for bass, I tied an approx.10" trailer wooly bugger jig on the rear treble of a floating Rapala & although I had some probs. with the unweighted ones turning over when I cast that light floater(1 1/2") when I cast & the Trout came to investigate, they would hit the fly more than the Rapala. When I used a jig it would sink faster than I wanted, but would turn over better. I was out yesterday & caught a few on jigs again. The Browns were curious but would not chase far.It is fun experimenting with different tecniques,  sam
