THE 2012 RUT?
Anyone out there around 2B see any bucks chasing any tails yet? I'm thinking with the warm weather this week and the cold front comming in next week that this will trigger the rut and it will be on? any opinions or info?

Youngins have been chasing and seeking for nearly two weeks now in SW PA. Find the does and the bucks won't be far behind.

Starting to see some more fresh scrapes. Heard a bunch of deer in the pre-dawn darkness and then a small buck about 80 yds off. Not a shooter so I didn't watch him much. Probably a 3-5 pt. A little while later, got a jet black weasel on video that shot across the logging road about 20 yds away from me. Seen them before in this are but never got good video of them. Got down and kicked out a few UFO's on the way out. Got hot quick once that sun came up.

My hunting buddy who lives near Swickley has been seeing chasing bucks the last few days. He normally doesn't even hunt on these hot days but said the bucks don't seem to mind the heat this year for some reason. He saw two shooters this morning chasing does.

Yesterday evening I pulled in from work a little after 5 and the 3 resident does were out sucking up acorns in my yard. About 10 minutes later I looked out the window to check on the does and saw a dandy 8pt running the does out of the yard. His lip was curled and he was grunting with his nose on the ground the whole time... I have noticed that the number of road kill bucks has really spiked within the last week as well.

Rut slow here on lands I have been hitting in 2A. Not even as much rubbing activity as usual much earlier in the year most years, and have seen only a handful of small scrapes. No chasing yet. Have seen a spike in the number of road kill all of a sudden in the past week, so I think its close. Gillz, never saw or heard of a black weasel, are you hunting anywhere near any kind of waterway, even very small stream? Sure sounds like a mink. As long as waterway is in general area, they'll travel some distance away from it. They're very dark brown.

Looks like a slow start to the rut out back on the ridge this year in central CT. NO rubs or scrapes yet but nice tracks where the mud is.. Considering the leaf hatch seems a couple of weeks early this year am sooprized at the kinda late rut activity. Watched some does and young along with a few decent bucks in a large NO Hunting field night before last- No interest being shown. Its still pretty warm here- That will change- frankly always thought it was more related to the day length any hoo- Passed on the bow for the first time in 50 years of hunting with it for deer this season. Cant wait for gun though.

Wayne, Nearest water is a stream about 400 yds away. Haven't seen many around here but a couple yrs ago in the same area I saw a couple other ones with lighter colorations. To be honest, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference b/w them so I guess it could be a mink. I'll try to post the video when I get a chance. Looked like a really big, black ferret.

After looking it up online last night, seems you guys are right. The weasels/ermines don't have that coloration but a lot of the pics of the male mink look like what I saw. Cool. He had a long trip to get to the stream and will have to cross a road. Hopefully he doesn't get squished. I can see why he was where he was, though. Dozens of red/gray/fox squirrels and a bazillion chippies in the old blow downs he was traversing.

They LOVE to eat frogs but when the little froggies start to dig into the mud for the Winter they tend to really wander.
