Eating pier fish

I feel a little weird asking this question, but somebody put a bug in my head. Are fish caught along the Piers safe to eat? The idea was that the bay is full of fuels and oils from the boats and fish stays around these areas and absorbs the chemicals. I've been wanting to fish the Piers, but this has kept me from doing it. Thank you.

I was talking to an oldtimer in Erie once (he was 92), I asked him about eating the fish and he said it hasn't hurt him yet.

I mean, I wouldn't make it my everyday meal, but I don't think that consumption from time to time will do anything.

You consume more chemicals in the Pepsi and Doritos you snack on while fishing than you do by eating the fish!

I was talking to a guy who was about 90, and he said the same thing, except he said his father was slowing down a little.

I was thinking along the same order as you guys. All fish have mercury and other stuff in them. Eating fish in limitation won't hurt. I have to admit also, seeing all that crud floating on top does make one a little suspicious.

How close to the top are the fish and how low are fuel and oil?
The only time they could see each other is when the lake is very rough or they are feeding on the top.
Yes there are other variables but they would be diluted into the whole lake.
