Great Fishing

Needed to knock a few cobwebs loose, so  made the run from DC to Erie on Friday.    Arrived in time to hit a couple spots.   Caught some fish and wanted to check another spot before dark.  New spot  had a bunch of guys fishing it, so went to hole below it.  No one there except a nice pod of fish.   Missed a couple, and then it started to rain so decided to call it a day.  Apparently, everyone at the first hole had the same idea and had already left.  I couldn’t pass it up.
Stripping a wooly bugger, it didn’t take long for a steelhead to come barreling out of the deeper cut up onto the shale shelf and crush the fly.  It came at it so hard that it threw a wake.   It was a fresh fish, and fought like it.  That it was in the 11 pound range  helped too.  Upon releasing her and watching her chrome flanks disappear into the pool, I was reminded once again of what beautiful fish these are.     Knowing the day couldn’t get any better and didn’t need to, it was time to  head for the car.
That’s why I love fishing Erie.   It really doesn’t matter how many fish there are or are not, or whether the water is high or low, or even how many people are crowding the best known spots.  The experience is still there, every bit as sweet as it ever was, and I am thankful for it.

And everone thinks Hagerstown to Erie is far out of my way...But I still go. :)

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
