winter gear
I thought, as the first flurries drift down on the river and temporarily bejewel the piles of garbage left behind, I'd start a thread on keeping warm. Lots of gear out there to choose from, I thought it might be instructive if people shared some of the stuff that works for them. A few pieces that have made me happier when it's heading for zero- Polarex fingerless glove /mittens , the type that have a place to tuck away the mitten when you're fishing. I built a house through a Vermont winter with these and used them fishing. They still work when wet, and have a double layer of fleece/polypropylene . My wife found them online for me, when the old ones started to rip beyond repair. About 14 bucks and very well worth it. Used as fishing gloves only, they'd last for years. I took a lot of grief for the bomber hat I wear, and having it appear in pictures. Yeah, on me. it looks stupid (not the hat's fault and a good reminder to stay out of pics here- never worried about it elsewhere), but the product is outstanding. It's a hat made by Columbia using their Omni-Heat reflective technology. They make products using a Kevlar/metallic material that is incredibly reflective. You put this hat on and heat radiates immediately. I never had a cold head even with below zero temps. My wife now has a parka and mittens with the same stuff. They are a good company and if something goes wrong, they will make good on it, even years down the road. It's also very water repellant and kept me dry when we've had cold rain, and certainly when snow piled up on it. I dislike wearing hoods when I'm in the river- I like to keep my peripheral vision- never know when a drift boat's sneaking up on you or a pinner's hero drift is about to go under your cast. Some things help me fish longer in the cold, with the daylight getting shorter, water time is important to me. I know we've got hunters and ice fisherman, too- it all applies. Charlie

Charlie great thread.. Thanks for the product endorse. I'll be looking to you for them. As I sit still in the woods at a balming 46 deg compared to 25 yesterday, it's all about moisture control and proper layering. Biggest problem is over heating while walking in then freezing once you settle down.
There are some great moisture wicking products made today that are super light . Since the products flood the cost has come down considerably . (shoot 2 small doe just walked by while typing) Anyway .. Polypropylene should be your first against the skin layer.
Back to hunting..

http://www.amazon.com/Pol...n-Gloves/dp/B001N8ALWU Charlie are these the gloves??? So far I have had good luck with Under Armor stuff. A little expensive, but worth it. We live about an hour from their outlet store and if you don't mind wearing weird colors (you wear them under your clothes) you can get a pretty good deal.

All of the above plus Goretex outerwear is great for leaving the sweat out and keeping the rain/snow from getting in.

They have alot of materials and stuff. They also have factory blem stuff at like 25% of the cost of new. Last time I was there I got some fly line for like $12 that was a little lighter than the color you can get in the store. The also have rods that have blems too.

Charlie: I ordered 2 pair of the gloves and hope the come in time for next weeks steel trip.. Couldn't believe the low cost and from your experience I think they will serve well.. For years and years I used the rag wool fingerless but they just don't make them like they used too as well as still dealing with frozen finger tips (I'm just not as hardy as I once was).. Next up I researched the Columbia hat.. Who the heck cares how ridiculous one might think it looks.. I for one am not about fashion.. Just look at me in my not so afraid to pose pic's wearing my dumb azz warm as heck hat.. It's super warm , was cheap as heck but gets wet.. Not good.. I'm going to go along the same line hat wise but looking to water proof outer shell.. I'm just a tad shell shocked at the columbia price tag.. Their colors are kinda out there as well, except for the Ebony blue.. Wouldn't it be neat however seeing double trouble in our future pic's.. LOL Maybe.. Anyway, Head, hands and base layer are covered.. Next layer for me is MICRO Fleece bottoms.. Great stuff, way better then the original loose fleece.. 400gram micro fleece wader liner pants ROCK.. P.S. Note the poly under base layer w/ micro fleece zip up under the (un zipped) wading gortex jacket.. Gortex is great but it don't breath.. You must allow moisture to escape..

Yeah, despite the claims, my Gore-Tex stuff makes me sweat. I hate wearing stuff that pulls over and I can't open up with zippers or buttons. I have expedition grade micro-fleece pants from EMS. My legs are NEVER cold. Feet a little....Nancy also bought me fleece liner socks that are soft, warm and supposedly the ultimate in wicking away moisture. Same company as the glomitts.

Clint: I ordered a Med from the link you posted.. I have short fingers and while work supplies me with winter work gloves, it seems that China thinks us Americans are all large..

Clint, you and I are about the same size, I got a Medium, and they are just a hair tight, but I like them that way- they don't flop around when I'm working or casting. Charlie

fleece fingerless gloves, and when it gets real cold i take one of the toe warmers with the stickum on the back and put it on my wrists (underside), its amazing how warm that keeps your hands base layer, normal is just the black silk like stuff that is wicking, but for the really cold days i have a fleece union suit i got from cabelas that keeps it toasty for the feet, bigger boots and a wicking undersock layer rather than bulky socks that make the boots fit tight and cut off blood flow head gear, fleece caps that cover the ears, if it gets real cold the mad bomber style fleece, and if its really bad a neopreane face mask....works way better than the old bandanna stay warm oh yea, the flask full of whiskey doesn't really help, but it feels good good thread

well I just walked home to a nice package.. The glove mitts came and I like what I see so far.. Granted they are not high super american made quality but they have all the right features for what I'm looking for at that price.. The mitten part folds nice into handwarmer pocket to keep it secure instead of a cheap velcro that never holds the flap.. The palms have a stitched grip material that is nice.. I ordered and received a med size that fits me great.. My only suggestion for a big hands guy, order what your real size is as thats the way they seem to run.. Thanks Charlie for the recommendation..
