Keystone Lake Drawdown

Took the family to Keystone State Park and was suprised to see the lake being drawn down. Does anybody know anything about the drawdown?  There was a sign that mentioned fish restoration, but that was pretty vague. Hoping this doesn't turn out to be permanent.

stopped out there today for a while.  water is down about 6-8 feet, not a drop of water flowing over the spillway.  along the campground side you can see all the fish cribs that the fish commission put in (now i know what i always get snagged on).  there are tons of big freshwater clams all over the place, the raccoons are probably having a feast.

i fished for about an hour, caught a small bass and a few gills.

The lake at Keystone State Park is in the process of a lake drawdown. The drawdown will be from October 15 until the spring of 2013. The process is being done for fish habitat project. The lake will be at it normal level prior to the first day of trout which is April 13, 2013

    here's the plan, http://fishandboat.com/water/habitat/mgmt_plans/lake/keystone_west.pdf

from what i've seen it would appear that they are adding more structure than is proposed on the map.  the park is using the opportunity to improve the handicap dock, launch and boat rental area.

ton of lead out there.  i walked from the launch to the beach and filled up two pockets just cleaning up fishing line.

WoW, that is ridiculously low!....I bet there is a load of lead and lures laying around to fill up a tackle box. Hopefully the improvements help the lake out.

Thanks Chris for picking up the trash! I do that all of the time when I'm fishing; picking up lead, old line, cigarette packs etc... . I realize it's little more than "a drop in the bucket," buit it makes me feel better and if it inspires other to do the same, it's a good thing. Also thanks for the pictures! I really like the one of the water flowing under the bridge, what there is of it anyhow!

I don't know if the DNR will map that structure they they are putting in & make it available to us  or not ,but now is the time to make the effort to take picts of it for future references. That should really make a difference for the boat fishermen & ice fishermen next year. This is the time to get out & help yourself while avoiding "cabin Fevor".   sam

The hollow icons or blue description boxes are the new structure.  GPS coordinates too

Chris, Thanks for the info. I will be out there with my range finder to see how far from shore they are. Friends of mine were there yesterday & said that they caught some trout. I was at Twin ranging some spots yesterday & heard to-day that both lakes are wide open,so I am going to throw some jigs this aftewrnoon.  sam

Fished at Keystone State Park this afternoon, the lake is filling up,most of the structure is now covered, even the backwater is filling. Talked to a couple of workers & they said that they thought that they were done with the work there.I was the only one there, got a few hits, but missed them.  btw stopped at (6-buoys) for bait, they had nice wax-worms & minnows. 724-668-7488  sam

According to the pfbc historical stocking info, Keystone Lake in Westmoreland County has been stocked with Saugers in 92 and 93 as well as Tigers '03, '04 and '11.  Is this a recording error, confusing KSP with Keystone Lake in Armstrong?

I realize that the fish stocked were fingerlings and sterile, but the '04 stocking was >3k tigers some of which must have been caught.  Has anyone caught a tiger from KSP?

KSP was stocked with Tigers, they were put in to try to provide summer angler opportunities & to try to help control the panfish pop. This was the explanation one of the PFBC Commisioners gave us. I have seen small Musky swimming the shoreline trying to catch small fish. I also caught 2 tigers approx.14" a few years ago & 2 years ago watched a guy get a nice one up to the hole but lost it while ice-fishing. He was using a Trout for bait on a tip-up. PS  the state stocked trout at KSP & Northmoreland yesterday but both are ice-covered with about 1 1/2" of ice.  sam

    Thanks!

I've heard stories about an accidental stocking years ago.  But this makes more sense.  I imagine a few of the '03/'04s are still around and nice sized.

I fished keystone today and brought the kids along. Only fished for an hour or so. I caught 2 beautiful rainbows both over 12 inches. First one was on a fathead from 6 bouys. The second was caught on a small blue fox flash spinner. The guys next to me seemed to be having some luck as well. Nice peacefull day to be out. The lake was about one-third open water with the rest being ice. Cant wait for the rest to thaw so i can take the canoe out and do some trolling.
