Wading jackets

After my encounter with the wind/rain/hail this past week, I am considering switching over to a waterproof wading jacket.  Can anyone recommend a good one?  Thanks.

I have a Frog Toggs jacket (not a wading jacket though).

I suppose if I had never worn it hunting, or walked in stream side brush, I might be very satisfied with it.   If you're just gonna stand in the stream and be places where you won't scratch it, you'll probably like it at least in terms of waterproof-ness.

If you wear it in brush at all, or are demanding on your gear, you'll probably feel like you wasted $70.

Yes Goretex is great. Essp the pro-shell
But there are other fabrics that are right there with it
Patagonia makes H2NO that is really nice

More important than the Goretex brand name is the layer construction
This gives you durability and breathability/waterproofness

Look for something that is 3 or 4 layer for best performance
But at that point you are looking at 200 and up
But that might not meet up with budgets of someone only using it 5 times a year to walk from 50ft from the lot to the stream on a path

Simms makes a Goretex jacket (2 layer) for 200
Reddington sonic seam jackets are badas

If you're not in the "hi-roller" class.....Gander Mountain Guide Series has a good gortex shell jacket that's affordable

i put 6-8  years of "heavy" use/abuse on mine .

I have been looking at a LL Bean Pac Lite Goretex wading jacket, anyone out there have one? Since I layer anyway for warmth this seems like a good rain/wind breaker jacket, they go for $180.00.

I was in that storm wearing that frog tog jacket and it kept me dry when it was pouring buckets. Get a size large enough to layer underneath.

I second purchasing Gore-tex or one of the similar materials if possible.  I started with a Gander Mountain Guide Series with the Gander Mountain water-proof material which was a great jacket.  After 4-5 seasons I decided to upgrade, was able to find a Simms G4 Guide Jacket at 60% off so jumped at the deal.  The difference in construction and durability is amazing.  I would say try to get the best jacket you can afford, it will treat you well in the long run!

My brother, father, and myself all have Cabelas Gortex wading coats and have 0 complaints. I agree if you want true waterproof material go with gortex.

thanks guys i do appreciate the feedback.  I am not a hi roller, unless u consider high class eating at the Olive Garden once a month
I am leaning towards something llbean because of the guarantee.  i had leaky waders after 2 years and they returned them no questions asked.

at one time this was true
but they push some imported junk just like everyone else

I'd rather buy a top tier product from some other company... than a bottom tier product from simms

!  Without a doubt make sure it’s gore Tex, especially when fishing Erie. Once cool weather sets in I wear one all the time  as a wind breaker against the chill factor and never have to worry if it’s going to rain so it serves a dual purpose especially near the lake.

    Gore is a brand

the key Gore-Tex patten expired and there are many other companies make as good/ if not better products.... and offer much better construction options

    Columbia- OmniDry
    NorthFace- Hyvent
    Polartech- Neoshell
    Marmot- Membrain
    Patagonia- H2NO
along with countless unbranded waterproof/breathable nylon fabrics

To say "gore-tex" is the "best" / "only" option is wrong ... and could lead you to pay more $ for a name brand that might not have the best performance

The green Hodgman one that Poor Richards carries is pretty nice. I've had mine for years. Lots of pockets, no need for a vest, plus if its not raining,m it really cuts the wind.
