Cranberry

Has anyone been to Cranberry lately? I was thinking about giving it a shot sometime this month with my float tube but I wasn't sure if I would just spend the day with weeds wrapped around my legs. Any thoughts?

i haven't been up to cranberry for a few weeks. i would think the weeds are still a little thick. though we have had several frosts here, so maybe they have died back a bit. there's a wicked heavy frost here right now, i'm around 500 feet lower than cranberry is, so if the weeds haven't died off, they will soon. either way, the water temp should have the pike waking up a bit.

thanks flyingmoles. I was thinking the pike may be about to get their feed on for the winter. I haven't ever targeted pike, but I figure it might be worth a shot.  Is it better to hit them in the morning or after the sun has warmed the water a bit?

i couldn't say either way. i've caught them morning thru evening. it seems to me that the giant pike are gone or just very sparse now. most i've caught in recent years have been sub legal to just over legal. my friend and i are planning on trying it out Sunday morning. i think we'll be throwing big chubs, but i also want to go for some of the ridiculously big carp. i'll post if anything goes well. if it's too weedy, i'll let you know. i'm guessing you don't live as close as i do. i'd hate to see anyone drive for a long time to not be able to get a lure in the water.

I think the big problem with cranberry is that too many people know about it so now the population is starting to suffer from people who can't C+R properly and people who take everything that's legal...

I would appreciate any reports you could give. I grew up in Dunbar but now live in Pittsburgh so it would definitely be a drive for me. Getting there and finding it not easily fishable would be a bummer. Of course I could always bring the gun along and go looking for some squirrels if the fishing didn't work out.

Me and a friend are supposed to go up sunday morning. he's from Nevada, so he's never fished for anything other than high mountain trout. it should be fun no matter what. we got another good frost last night so i'm hoping that helped with the weeds. i'll report back after we return. i'd hate to see anyone drive all the way from Pitt and not be able to fish it. This year has been a good one for squirrels. i'm sure they will be around even if the fish aren't.

Thanks again flyingmoles. I haven't hunted up there for years so it might be worth the drive for that either way.

Well, a lot of the weeds have died off on the surface, but all their under water parts are still causing problems. The fish weren't cooperating yesterday. We had a few hits but caught nothing.

Would the underwater parts probably affect me trying to float tube or is it just a matter of lures getting hung up?

seems like most of what is there is loose and just piled up in places from the wind. we had to use all top water lures. anything that went more than a foot below the surface was picking up weeds. grasses mostly. the lily pads are gone for the year. if it hadn't been too windy, we would have switched to throwing poppers with flyrods.

I am a little worried about the wind if I go there. My plan was to use a flyrod but I hate the idea of fighting the wind all day. I guess that is where the backup plan of squirrel hunting would come in.

Yough Dam is also right down the road from there as is the Cassleman river both are good fishing holes as well.  The PFBC said they are catching crappies in the lake and loads of rock bass in the outflow, I'm assuming the trout are pretty active in the outflow as well...
