10/8/12 10/9/12
I took Trevor's way today and left for fishing at 11:00. My thought which held true was most guys that get up early leave for lunch and crowds were not horrible there but slamming in town. Fished at 2/A today never been there. Walked the whole stretch from 81 to salmon haven. Saw all kings that I could tell and a mixed bag of movers, spawners and lots in the holes, saw lot's of females digging out Redds. . The fish are starting to show their age as most had spots. I pi$$ed off one male enough to hit, but line got caught on the handle of the reel somehow and it was a short bout.

A buddy of mine wanted to go out before work this AM so we met up at 6:15 at all seasons. Fished in town and for the most part crowds were middle of the road. Only had till 9:30 so we stayed put and did not walk far. Place was loaded with Kings and a few Ho's. We were fishing with beads hoping to pick up a trout or a salmon stupid enough to hit. I had 2 kings on, one was fouled hooked for sure and one seemed close to the mouth, but never had a good look. Spin fishing with 10 lb test and a noodle.

Bear, I had my sac's in hand until I left them to pick up the coffee and left them on the counter. With a limited time could not go get more. Tried beads and a bead and an eztaz on the noodle. The one I hooked I was drifting and all of a sudden the line started going up stream. I fought like a good hook with a head shake at hook set.

FWIW all the takes I have had this year have been on Chartreuse, pink estaz eggs and 2 on a egg sucking leach with red or orange head

Bear is that an all black estaz and what size??? Not asking for a spoon feed, just wondering if it was an all black on lets say a 6 hook ,thinking they may think it is a stonefly. Orange I can understand as an egg imitation. Trying to understand the nature of the sharks to help with the hookups

We always had more luck in the middle of the run with buggy looking stuff, hare's ear type nymphs wirh the old Orvis All Purpose look. Also small olive and green caddis larvae ties, sometimes orange ones like a breadcrust as well. I know some folks would say we are just sliding that small stuff in, but some days one color worked and the others didn't, so I always thought they were taking, and I was not fishing any different rigs, 2-3 foot tippet below a barreland the least weight I could use to get the fly about half way down the drift. I also caught most of my early browns on this stuff, as well as on pink eggs or egg clusters (yes, the little rubber ones that we used to have to use in the Finger Lakes before eggs became legal.) Once a lot of the hens are finished and the males start getting deperate again in late October, they start hitting the bigger, aggresive fish stuff, but by then I'm looking for Steel, and the sharks become a pain in the flybox. L13, I would like very much to fly fish for SR browns and steel using streamers/ nymphs and a 9' 8 wt. Just to far a skip for me and I know I wouldn't enjoy or feel comfortable driving alone. I still have some smaller trout to be had in regions of the Catskills. But nothing like the powerful double digit monsters in the SR. When ever I do visit, the first time I wade out along and start casting , I get a sense I'm somewhere way back in time.. you know what saying? like almost prehistorical or something like a Jurassic park.. know what i mean? lol anyway, wish to come up this later fall.

Been slacking on posting but been up a couple of times.Don't have the experience as a lot of you guys but getting much better. All your advise has helped shorten the learning curve.Been fishing mid river with awesome results.Fish shy and subdued colors are working better for me.Scared to break my 8wt so still using spin gear.Cutting back on weight is saving tons of gear with better results and clean hook ups. Flossing? Probably, but have gotten legit hits.Got my son one on his first trip Sunday.A great sight.Smiling from ear to ear.Looking for a pair of size 13 waders if anybody wants to unload an old pair as long as they are dry. Bootfoot neos my buddy gave me for son have some pinhole leaks in sole that I can't seem to plug.Plastic bags on feet this weekend.Saw about 25 with slit bellies on the shore of some smaller water-a sad sickening sight.Reported to DEC but not much they could do at that point.Finding room to fish has not been a problem.Staying away from crowds on main channel and have been finding fish resting/cruising secondary channels still in main river.Plenty of beat up Christmas trees but also plenty of clean fish with plenty of fight.Does it get any better than this? Good luck to all.PM me about waders.Would even rent them as he will get a pair for next year, just can't swing it right now.Wanted to make sure he was into it before spending the cash.

Does it get any better than this? Yes it does, once the salmon are almost gone and the jalorms with them, and the steel are in in numbers. Then I can justify the gas costs, maybe even spring for 45 for a day! L13

I remember one salmon season way back sometime when snagging and pretty much everything up there (except night fishing in the streams) was legal. Some dead chinooks were used to bridge the muddy holes on the paths from the parking lots to the river. That still happening?
