You can catch steelhead from Ontario tribs through pa and ohio on erie with the same tactics.Smaller tribs downsize your presentation.Larger flows upsize. This is a general statement.I fish with my pin anywhere steelhead swim.I just vary leaders, floats, and shot.Don't overthink it.They are fish afterall.

85...The mile cricks are no better nor are they any worse than the west side. Some years it takes the fish a bit longer to get in there due to the lack of rain and access to get into the cricks but just as soon as they blow out then they will come in. There may be fish in elk and da nut early sept. cause the mouth access is always open where as the mile cricks need a blow out for the fish to enter and some years you wont see them for 2-4 weeks later. Thats just how it is. There are always numbers in every trib in Erie co. so pick one and go fish it.

Tactics , are the same if thats the way you fish for them. I will cast spoons, rooster tails , use the fly rod , or spin with bait. It all depends on how I want to fish for them. Either way Ill catch em any way I fish.

    anymore....yes.
There is 3 holes to fish on 7 mile....I remember not stopping to fish if there was already 3 or 4 cars there, now seeing 12-15 cars there is common.  The fact is you are not going to get away from the crowds for erie steelhead this time of year. All of the fish are down low and the people are pretty think in those areas.

I think Pymatuning is the way to beat the crowds in early October, that or the last Pirate's home stand or any Pitt home game (not playing this weekend).

Like freshwaterdrumR said, the water is smaller.  You definitely won't see 100 guys in a 100 yard area, but comparing fishable water to amount of fishermen, it is the same.  Even when fish start to spread out in the creeks, they all stay relatively crowded upstream.  It is just the way of the Erie tribs.  Don't get me wrong, if you happen to be there during a torrential downpour or snowstorm on a Wednesday morning, you'll find some open water to yourself...  Hit the upstretch sections of the larger creeks in the early season.  There might be miles of water to yourself, but likely only 2-3 fish in that stretch too.  If you don't mind not catching, it's not a bad deal.  You are almost garunteed to catch more closer to the lake now, but having some open real estate and just a chance of hooking up, is more relaxing.  I used to fish the East side 12-13 years ago, since I had friends in Harborcreek.  They were still crowded then, and twice as crowded the last time I checked them out last year.  Also seems to be twice as much posted land too.  If you venture over, study the maps as much as you can, so you aren't doing what I did last time, and spending more time driving around looking for a spot to fish rather than fishing.

That said, the Park Tavern is worth a visit.  Better wings than the Avonia Tavern, which are good too.  Also, if you happen to be there for a few days, and the weather has made things unfishable or convinced the wife to come along or just need a gift for the queen for letting you out, the winerys are a nice feature of that side of town.

Everyone knows the only time to fish Pymie is early Spring at the Spillway anyhow!  It was just the first body of water that came to mind.  I had a very enjoyable Fall trip there a few years back (only panfish), but had about a mile between me and any other boats.  With the water level issues at Pymie, I highly doubt there is going to be any additional rush from my comment.  Not sure, if it instantly filled up to normal levels and great reports would pull many away from the king of all PA feesh.  There might be a mad rush by those with mooring permits, to physically be able to pull their boats...

Tracker  ,  There are about 5 winery's around the northeast area.

Presque Isle is on Rt 20 between harborcreek and northeast.
Heritage and Arrowhead wineries are on rt 20 just east of the Pa state line exit. One exit past the Rt89 Northeast exit.
Penn Shores winery is on Rt5 east of Rt 89 in northeast.
Mazza winery is on Rt5 west of Rt 89 in northeast.
If you go a bit farther east just over the PA NY border there are a few on RT 20 and RT 5 into NY only about 10 - 15 miles east of the line. into Ripley and Westfield.

Deetz, you forgot South Shore on Freeport Road. It's owned by Mazza, but a little nicer building. Also check this out:

Fishing the East Side, especially the smaller streams, is HEAVILY dependent on high water events.  Steelhead on the smaller streams will come in, hang out, and then head back out to the lake in a matter of days if the water levels get low again, or if they keep going upstream, they can be easily out of reach because of private property on many of them.

I've had times where I've caught them in October, and times when the smaller streams seem to be devoid of fish.  I've also had days where I've had good days with a lot of fish in some of the smaller streams and have talked to people that went just a few days later, and found almost nothing.  East Side streams can be hit or miss.

That reminds me.......... Can't forget to stop at the South Shore on Freeport when I'm up in a few weeks to pick up 8 bottles. Per orders from the wife!

Thanks for the info.  greatly appreciated.  Might get the wife to share the driving up with the news of a wine tour.  Now I have to fiend someplace to stay in that area.  I'm not sure she will go for the Riviera.

Sparkling Ponds Winery is just across the NY line on Rt5.  They named a wine after me.  It's a sweet, blush wine that women really like...they call it the Woman Pleaser.
