9/1/12

Well I had to work today, but I flew up after work as I wanted to buy some hooks for tying so why not give it a few casts.   Today I parked at the staircase and walked down.  I will say I am the slayer of chubs, but nothing else.   Not even 1 fish seen.  WE NEED RAIN BAD.

Some remnants of the hurricane are heading north. Not much, but maybe some. Dismal stuff, but thanks anyway, Clint and Dime.
I hope the fall gets wetter. Nothing like a cold, drizzly day with a chance of  flurries in the evening to make me think STEEL!

Dime we have a good well, but I am starting to get worried none the less.  Our water is getting a little sulfur smell now and then  and sometimes that means it is getting low.
Charlie,  I know what you mean I am really looking forward to some colder steel weather.  Now I look at salmon fishing   in a whole new light.  It is like preseason football,  it's something to do until the REAL season starts.  I really do hope whats left over from Issac gives us some rain, but honestly we need more than a few inches.  Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Does n't look like there is enough left of Isaac to mean much,I don't see anything in the long range to mean anything either.I'm waiting for a few more days and if nothing changes I'm cancelling my trips for Salmon. If this goes on there is n't going to be any quality fishing at all this fall.
I look forward all year to fight the King and Coho and this happens.I hope they're happy that they made a couple kayakers happy, dumb asses should have never released all that water with no snow pack!

my friend tells me they used to run on almost no water 5 days a week.
he says nature tells them they have to run and run they will.
he says no up close sight fishing.its a game of find a pocket, stand back 30 feet, take of all the weight and cast like when you are really fishing.
i'm going either the 18 or 19 or both and he tells me there will be plenty of fish.
just have to find a spot where the people that can't catch a fish unless they see it aren't herding them too much.
    sure hope hes right.
i really want to fight a vfresh 25+ pound kink or fresh coho.
good luck everybody. the game is afoot.

twobob, this is what you will find if conditions stay as they are.First off yes they will come but they won't go very far as there will be a trickle for them to swim in.The hordes of GOONS will be lined up shoulder to shoulder at every hole,as that is the only place the fish will be,slashing and yanking at them, the fish will be scared ****less and will hit nothing no matter how well it's presented and none of the fish will be caught legally.
You did n't say if that was Sept or Oct that you plan on coming,if it's Sept there may not be as many GOONS as Oct so you MIGHT find a place to actually fish ethically then, but I would n't bet on it.If you come in Oct you might want to try the DSR as they try to keep control of the GOONS down there.
Lets all pray for Leslie to hit the east coast and drench us!

Well its not all doom and gloom. The Weather Channel has changed up the 10 day for Pulaski. A few days ago it looked like maybe just Tuesday, now its more than a maybe and a few more hit/miss thunderstorms days have been thrown on to make it a four day stint. Then next weekend could be wet thanks to a parade of cold fronts starting to make their way down from Canada. I don't know how you guys feel but this news is better than the outlook just three days ago.

Just give me a tranquil lake in 4 days and I'll be happy.
River was very quiet as expected today. Threw some stuff in the memory bank for trout toady.

Guys its not so doom and gloom here.
Last year was a fantastic trout fishery and I would have to expect the same going forward.

That's what I'm saying Tuna, everyone is painting a bad picture. Sure its not ideal now but even a couple of good thunderstorms that hang out for about an hour can make a big difference. Have fun up there man, the bears will be there soon enough.

pafisher to be fair to my friend he did say that at the time he was talking thet did change the flow for short periods during the week.
he did say i should suck it up and pay to fish in the dsr.
he did say the holes even down there would be crowded with as he called them sight fishers.
but he did say to find a spot between holes where from a bit back you couldn;t see the bottom and salmon woukd rest there giving me a chance to fish to them.
he said these fish are the most aggressive fish.

with all this talk about drought and no fish running does the dec ever consider pulsing the water a little bit just after dark so the fish could move upriver a bit towards the hatchery before the "GOOONS" as you call them can slaughter them? or just the opposite and run it a little more during the day making it harder for those ripping at them and then dropping it at night to save water to run the next day.
prolly a reason but i'm just learning so i don't get it.
why should they run it super low or as high as they can 24  7.

dec doesn't control the water the power co does
and they could give a crap about our fishing....not figured in their bottom line
i find it comical how every year people are wringing their hands, worried about the salmon season, railing against the goons snaging, etc
its like the first robin of spring....it just means the fish will soon be here and we will all be fishing not internet chatting

Too funny big bear...twobob, bear is right about dec having no control...and even if they did, there is no water to pulse it up at night. They may have to shut it off completely if things continue this way...on a brighter note, i just checked the weather underground forecast for redfield and this evening through thursday evening is full of scattered thunderstorms. Sometimes these storms can isolate certain areas and dump heavy rain in certain areas of isolation...2" an hour storms sometimes...so we may get lucky andpick up some slack for the res...but then we are folllowed by a dry week next week...so i guess we'll see. I could care less about the salmon at this point...the reservoir coming back to a sustainable level and the unfortunate folks without water i think matter more...the salmon will come no matter what.

Killin me,Rich. Left last night after 4 hours of getting skunked. Even went up by Dime's and drowned some worms. Couldn't even get a smallie out of those holes. A good scouting trip though, learned a lot about channels due to water being so low. Purpose of trip was to drop some stuff off to my son at school. Will be up again in two weeks.Hope to run into some of you guys in the near future. Peace.                   Dime, give me a shout, have a bunch of work stuff for you.

It lasted about an hr then the more guys that came the less fish moved through.
Learned something though. The bait of choice was some sort of small floating orange egg with 3 heavy shot. Seems the fish are hitting off the surface.
Must be the hot bait as everyone was using them.

    Funny thing:
2 kids with their dad & pops were fishing off the sweet platform using bobbers & worms. They were having a ball catching fish on every cast.

    Tuna-
We used to lake fish using a small floating orange  sac rigged through a slip sinker of about 1/4 oz - so we could cast it out and hold bottom too-  we would set it  to  float  about 3 feet off the bottom.
Does this sound anything like what you were seeing in the Estuary ??

Rich, some small floating orange egg with 3 HEAVY SHOT,the fish were hitting off the surface? How was the bait on the surface with three HEAVY SHOT?
What species of fish were the kids catching with bobbers and worms?
I'm watching Leslie on the weather station, thought maybe she would soak us in a week or so,but it looks like it's going north to maybe above Maine, east coast will get some heavy waves. The only hope now is sustained thunderstorms but it's not looking good.

Guys, the floating egg deal with a slip sinker is an old trick for mouth hooks in the estiary...old timers used to use marshmallows on a treble hook down line drom an egg/slip sinker. Before leader regs came in to play the egg sinker would sink to bottom and your floating rig would just float freely creating a long sweep line between your weight and floating rig... ;) ;) ;)

The slip sinker and floating egg sac is a good choice for chrome in the fall ;)

The water is 3-4 ' deep. Sinkers dropped to bottom , super bright orange egg to surface. I know the theory ;) . Just never stood on bridge and watched in action.
    Go figure .

Rt it was nothing like how you fish the lake from shore.

Yea --sounds similar in theory but with a different hooking mentality-- In the lake the fish BIT them and several  species were not uncommon in an evenings fishing expedition.
Naturally somebody figured out how to LINE them in  moving water with a similar method  LOL.
Dont know why on earth I thought a fair catch scenario might be forthcoming.

i understand that there is no water now.
i was guessing that at some time there would be though.
it was then that i was talking about.
why not pulse it to move the fish at that point?
i know the power company is in control not dec but from reading other boards i have seen they are having a meeting so dec must have some inout.
they also issue the license for the power company so it would be in the company's best interset to listen to dec if the bottom line was not effected too drasticly wouldn't it?

We also have to remember the fish in the reservoir also.   Bass, perch, walleye, rainbows and browns.   They are stressed now too.  We do not need a big fish kill up there as the water is at one of the lowest points I have seen in my 40 years.
