PLANER BOARDS

Currently running the large planer boards off the mast on the bow of the boat. Not running lead core but use snap weights to get my plugs down. What I'm finding now however, as the fish are deeper, I need larger 4,5, or 6 oz. weights to get the plugs down. This is affecting the speed of the planer board and subsequently the ability to keep the board line up and out of the water. At times I can only run 1 lure off of a board. Been looking at the smaller, individual boards from Church, Big John, etc. Any opinions on these as compared to the larger, traditional boards? Are they able to hold their own with 300 or 400 ft. of line out with 4 or 5 ozs. of snap weight and a deep diving lure? If I do make the switch to lead core, can these smaller boards support that weight along with deep diving lures? Any recommendations on the brand? Thanks

They make one inline board, I believe it is the church TX-44 that can pull a big dispy lol so it should be able to handle a reef runner and 6oz.   I have the smaller boards on my boat as well as big boards.  I use the offshore planers with homemade tattle flags.  I usually use them when pulling inlines at slow speeds, once you go at higher speeds (2.2mph+) I find it harder to tell whats going on. The tattle flags are useless when pulling something like a reef runner - they pull back to hard, so you need to keep a very close eye on what the board itself is doing.  I find it a lot easier to tell whats going on when running big boards with heavy weights and plugs so thats what I use. If you get a very hard pulling board you wont have the problem with the weight holding it back.  The Amish outfitters pull like hell, you could pull a small car behind them and not affect their speed/pull lol.  I have a pair of homemade boards that I am adjusting everytime out to get them to pull harder- I can run 3 reef runner 800's with 4oz eights on each side right now. I havent tried any heavier weight yet.
I just started with some 5-color leadcores this year and so far I like them a lot.  They dont pull as hard as a snap weight and they work. This weekend I may try adding a 2 or 3oz weight to one of them and see what happens.

personally I'd invest in the leadcore. I run 8 rods of 5 colors off my big boards so those will get me to 25' then whatever plug I want to run will put me in the zone.

Don't waste your money on inline boards, buy a set or aurora light planer boards they pull hard enought to keep 4 10 color leadcores running on one side without the board line sagging back.

Agreed unless you have a smaller lightweight boat...otherwise the Auroras will be steering your boat instead of the boat steering the Auroras.

Agree w\Bogey.  I have a 19" Lund Tyee and the Aurora boards pulled me all over the lake.

church makes a clip that is reversed.. you have to buy extra.. then your fine...

Offshore also makes a clip that you have to buy extra that locks your line in .. then your fine..

I run offshore and have over $50 in each board.. I have used the church and it's faster to set....

Both will work if you buy the extra clip...oh church boards have movable wieghts that are nice ..

Thinking of doing something like that on my offshore..
